North Yorkshire East Federation of WIs arrange a variety of events and workshops throughout the year. Three of our members joined the walk from WI House in Norby, Thirsk last week. First stop was St Mary’s where we admired the architecture, font and the wall hanging plus we couldn’t resist a photo of the knitted donkey. Someone is very talented!

Then back out into the rain, we walked through arable fields between Thirsk and South Kilvington ending up at the old water mill. It was a treat to see inside. Many thanks to Trustee Margaret Ellison for leading the walk and arranging access to the mill .

Our walk ended back at WI House, where we were treated to a delicious homemade quiche lunch with eton mess to follow. Thanks to Trustee Sarah McFarlane and Jane Burns for such an excellent lunch.

It was NFWI Annual Meeting day and 5 of our members joined the Federation virtual meeting at the Galtres Centre in Easingwold.
3 really good speakers:
Mary Lewis talking of her 30 year career working with Jane Goodall who sadly passed suddenly last year.
Prof Michele Dougherty a professor of space physics and 1st Astronomer Royal talking of her involvement in unmanned space exploration.
Anne Boden, founder of Starling bank who became an entrepreneur after packing in her job in her mid 50s and revolutionising the banking industry.
Also, 2 resolutions to be debated and voted for: 'Accessible public toilets' passed with 95% in favour and 'Action on women's homelessness ' passed with 92% in favour.
Concluded with video addresses from Hon Julia Gillard AC former PM of Australia and Dame Jacinda Arden, politician and former PM of New Zealand.
A brilliant day, truly inspiring and supportive of all women.
Next year it's an in person meeting in Hull - see you all there!

Last Thursday our meeting was a joint fundraising event with Thornton le Dale Ukuleles held at Helmsley Sports Pavilion.
Band leader John Scoble led proceedings with wit & humour, taking the audience on a musical adventure.
Tambourines & maracas were distributed along with song sheets & audience participation was encouraged.
A brilliant evening with money for both groups being raised from ticket sales & a raffle.
A big thank you to everyone who supported this event.

The Bluebell walk in Riccal woods is an annual treat for both residents and visitors to Helmsley. A group of our members enjoyed visiting last weekend, some walking and some travelling by car. As well as enjoying the pop up cafe, it was good to see fellow member Denise, working hard as one of the volunteers for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
