Nosterfield Nature Reserve

Nosterfield Nature Reserve Nosterfield LNR is Hambleton District’s first and only Local Nature Reserve, designated in 2001.

It started to draw birdwatchers in the mid 1970s and early 1980s, as quarrying reached the water table and started to draw birds. It was designated as a Site of Importance for Birds (SINC) in 1993 and is now generally recognised as North Yorkshire’s premier wetland grassland site for birds.

Birds-eye primrose (Primula farinosa) photographed in the Habitat Creation Nursery at Nosterfield Quarry

This beautiful plant still grows around limestone seepages in the Moors and Dales, but was once widespread in damp meadows across the Central Vale too. A combination of habitat loss and drainage mean it's been lost from the Washlands for now.

Have you spotted a Bloody-nosed Beetle at Nosterfield Nature Reserve?

Keep an eye out for them on the reserve at this time of year, especially along the path from the dipping ponds to the North Viewing Screen!

Nosterfield NR is thought to be the most northerly outpost for this beetle on the eastern side of the country.

You can find out more about the Bloody-nosed Beetle at Nosterfield NR in this report from The Naturalist in the Biodiversity Heritage Library:
