Thank you to everyone who voted Green in the Rugby Borough Council elections!
Last Thursday's local elections made it clear that people want change in Rugby and beyond. The Green Party and Reform are the only parties in Rugby who saw an increase in overall vote share, with Labour losing 22% of their overall vote share compared to the last Rugby Borough Council elections in 2024. As well as a general increase in Green votes across the board, we also had some promising ward results. Green Party candidates came 2nd in Benn ward (with 20% of the vote), and also secured 3rd place for seats in Eastlands, Wolston and the Lawfords and Wolvey and Shilton.
We know that we need to keep up the momentum, and we're already looking to the 2027 local elections. Rugby Borough Council is set to be disbanded in the next few years, to be replaced by a new Unitary Authority model. This move will combine the powers of the Borough/ District and County Councils into one or possibly two Unitary Authorities across Warwickshire. Current plans are for the 2027 local elections to be for Shadow Unitary Authority councillors in preparation for the new Unitary Authority being formally invested in 2028. These Unitary Authority councillors will be the decision makers impacting people's lives in Rugby in the long term, which is why we're already getting to work planning for the 2027 elections.
The strength of the Green Party is, and has always been, in its members. Rugby Green Party has expanded from around 70 to over 300 members in the last year as people across Rugby have chosen a vision of hope not division. Rugby Green Party is run by a team of 9 volunteer committee members and we're proud to be party who are funded by our members, so we are not beholden to the interests of big businesses or sponsors.
We know that many of you want to see more Green Party activity in Rugby, so we invite anyone who shares our vision of hope to get involved and help to make it a reality. Send us a message to find out how you can get involved, and if you’re not already a member then join us today at join.greenparty.org.uk
