🏠 HMOs IN SALFORD: WHY ARE SOME WARDS CARRYING THE LOAD?

After analysing Salford’s HMO registers, one question keeps coming up…

Why are licensed HMOs so heavily concentrated in a handful of wards while other parts of the city have very few?

The figures show that just five wards account for more than two thirds of all licensed HMOs recorded in Salford:

πŸ“ Weaste & Seedley
πŸ“ Ordsall
πŸ“ Broughton
πŸ“ Quays
πŸ“ Blackfriars & Trinity

Together, these five wards contain over 1,100 licensed HMOs, accounting for around 68% of the total recorded across Salford.

In some areas, residents can point to streets where HMOs appear one after another, creating a very different picture from what is seen in many other parts of the city.

This raises some important questions.

Why have so many HMOs become concentrated in a relatively small number of communities?

Why weren’t these properties distributed more evenly across Salford?

What impact has this had on parking, local services and neighbourhoods?

And with Government planning reforms expected later this year, will local residents still have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their communities?

Another question worth discussing is the condition of some of our neighbourhoods.

Many residents will be familiar with areas that regularly experience issues with litter, fly-tipping and environmental neglect. Some of these areas are also wards with higher concentrations of HMOs.

We’re not suggesting there is a direct link. There are many possible factors, including enforcement, waste collection, landlord management and wider community issues.

But it is a conversation worth having.

We’re not making accusations. We’re asking questions and looking at the data.

πŸ” Reform UK Salford will continue examining:

βœ… HMO concentrations across Salford
βœ… The planning decisions that shaped them
βœ… The impact on local communities
βœ… Environmental issues raised by residents
βœ… Whether local people are getting a fair say in decisions affecting their neighbourhoods

What do you think?

Are HMOs fairly distributed across Salford?

Has your area seen an increase in HMOs over recent years?

Have they had a positive, negative or mixed impact on your community?
