This week, some of our theatre colleagues are taking part in industrial action relating to pay. Here’s our chief nursing officer Juliette Cosgrove with a brief update, including the background to the industrial action.

For any patient who is worried about how this week’s industrial action will affect your care: we will contact you directly if there any changes. Patients don’t need to call us up to check. If you’ve not been contacted by us, please come in as planned.

Timely X-rays could make it faster to identify people who have had a bladder injury after breaking their pelvis, new research suggests.

This would mean they could be quickly referred to a urologist for treatment, as well as saving them from having more invasive tests.

Orthopaedic specialists from Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust , MFT Research and Innovation and The University of Manchester Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health carried out the study using records from 600 patients treated at two local trauma centres. Their investigation showed that when X-rays identified leaking of fluid from a vein into the surrounding tissue (extravasation), this strongly correlated with bladder injury. X-rays within 10 hours of a CT scan were more reliable.

The work has been published in the journal Injury. NCA’s authors were Elgenaid Ahmed, Syed Hassan, Vijaya Kempanna, Inder Gill and Mohammed Iqbal.

A simple hand-held breath test device could help improve early lung cancer diagnosis, researchers have found.
The low-cost Inflammacheck test detects hydrogen peroxide, a marker for lung tumours, in exhaled breath. It could potentially be used in the UK Targeted Lung Health Check programme to improve the efficiency of screening by reducing the number of expensive CT scans needed.
The ExPeL study was led by Dr Sean Knight and colleagues at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester , supported by our acute and inpatient research delivery teams.
The results have now been published the journal Clinical and Translational Science.
