Hazel4Eastfield

Hazel4Eastfield Born in Bedford Street in Scarborough, my gran born in Spreight Lane Steps (bottom end), grew up in Hawthorn Walk and Dunn Grove. I will fight for Eastfield.

Started school at Overdale, later at St. Peter's and the (now closed) Scarborough Convent. Ended up working all over the world, including a couple of years for the United Nations humanitarian agencies (UNICEF and World Food Programme) in North Korea. All the opportunities I have had as an adult come about from my solid Scarborough family background where I was taught that all of us deserve a dec

ent life but we have to work and (sometimes) fight for it. I was also previously a councillor in Colchester and then the London Borough of Lambeth, where I was Chair of Housing - responsible for the largest housing investment programme in the country (about £50 million a year at the time). I negotiated with government to help bring about the end of the hated Tory poll tax - in which the very poorest homes and families were forced to pay as much tax as the wealthiest. I will bring my local background, council leadership and national negotiating experience to the table to fight for investment, especially in housing, health services, bus services and education.

Be interesting to see if Tony Randerson’s vanity project in the “Social Justice” party stays around.
And I see the nettles are still flourishing in the planters outside the shops that the previous Eastfield councillor left to become the grubbiest high street in the county, probably in the country. Eastfield residents deserve better.

It is great to see Alison on the case here. Sad to see that the Conservative North Yorkshire council have paid no attention whatsoever to Cayton residents concerns. Yes we need more homes - but we also need a Council working with local health services to make sure GP services are properly provided. North Yorkshire council also responsible for schools. Where’s the planning for the inevitable growth in numbers?

Thank you to constituents who attended my Cayton surgery and Ask Alison public meeting today.

The meeting was also attended by NY Councillor Roberta Swiers, NY Councillor Liz Colling and several councillors from Cayton Parish Council as well the Parish Clerk Gill Armstrong.

We discussed the “Mountby” housing development by Persimmon for 1,400 as part of North Yorkshire Council’s local plan. The Council will be given strategic support by the government as part of our Accelerated Housing Development programme.

It’s clear that villagers are angry and fearful, made worse by unfinished infrastructure from previous developments, and I understand their worries.

Issues discussed included: poor GP services inc Eastfield, building on a flood plain, roads unable to cope, traffic, farmers unwilling to sell, issues with sewage & Yorkshire Water in general and the number of affordable/social homes.

Feedback forms were filled in and collected so that I can contact Persimmon, Yorkshire Water and others engaged in infrastructure delivery.

I’m at the start of my engagement on this and am in listening mode. It’s highly likely the development will go ahead in some form so it’s very important residents make their views known to their elected local representatives to shape it.

Cayton’s councillor on North Yorkshire Council is Cllr Roberta Swiers. She can be contacted on: [email protected]

Did you know you can table public questions in advance of the North Yorkshire Council Scarborough and Whitby Area Committee Meetings which take place quarterly usually in Scarborough?

North Yorkshire Council make no effort to advertise them but they are a useful way of asking a question in advance and getting an answer on the day. Details are on the ( very hard to navigate) website.

https://edemocracy.northyorks.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=1229&MId=19397

Members of the public may ask questions or make statements at this meeting if they have given notice three working days before the day of the meeting. Members of the public who have given notice will be invited to speak. You get about 3 minutes.

The next meeting is Friday 19th September at 10am so get your questions in!

Details of the planning application are here: https://planning.scarborough.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=SENWVHNS0F600&activeTab=summary

Please also contact your Cayton Parish Councillors and the Clerk here: https://caytonparishcouncil.gov.uk/staff/

If you wish to raise issues to do with government policy regarding this development please email me on [email protected]

Once Persimmon has submitted their plans I’m happy to attend any further meeting that the Parish Council organise for residents.

It is voting day tomorrow Thursday 19th. Please vote. It is your democratic right and all our ancestors fought - literally - very hard for us to have that right. I have a great uncle buried in a war grave in France - a young lad from Scarborough who never came back. Vote in their honour.

Great to join up with Deputy Mayor Jo Coles in Eastfield today to discuss North Yorkshire Police hot spot patrols which target anti-social behaviour across the community.
Thanks to £2 million new investment from our Labour government there will be 32 additional Police Constables and 20 PCSOs for our region.
We need positive change for Eastfield. That's what you'll get with me. If elected on Thursday I'll ensure we keep working for a safer Eastfield with Jo and Mayor, David Skaith.

St Cecilia’s looked after my dad when he was in a very bad way and had not been properly and kindly looked after in the months before we finally found St Cecilia’s. Someone interested in working for an organisation which, from our family’s experience, employs staff that really do put the ‘care’ into ‘social care’ might be interested in this job. Social care comes under the remit of NY Council. If elected I will campaign to ensure that all those who need social care and the families that are always left picking up the pieces - because the services are either not good enough, not joined up, or just non-existent - are heard and listened to.
