🚨 Stay Safe on the Dark Nights! 🚨

As the evenings get darker earlier, we want to help keep everyone in our community safe — especially our dog walkers, cyclists, joggers, and anyone out and about after dark. 🌙🐕🚴‍♂️

Pop down to Selby Fire station on Friday the 14th November and chat with our crew about how to stay visible and safe this season. We’ve got lights, reflectors, and safety advice to help make sure you’re seen on the roads and paths. 💡✨

✅ Be bright — wear something reflective
✅ Be seen — use lights when walking or cycling
✅ Be safe — plan your route and let someone know where you’re going

Let’s keep our community safe together❤️

Would you know what to do in a fire? Find out how to prepare your home or business should the worst happen. Take a few minutes to have a quick conversation with the Yorkshire Ready Together online tool for emergency preparedness. You can talk about more than fires too – there’s advice on other issues like flooding, extreme weather and power outages.

The Yorkshire Ready Together online tool that provides real-time, two-way, emergency preparedness advice via a free AI tool, has been rolled out in a community pilot in Selby. The tool offers advice on potential issues and major events such as flooding, fires, extreme weather and power outages. Banners and posters have been distributed to key community locations in the town including at Selby Abbey, the local NHS drop-in centre and hospital, the Town Hall, community centres, leisure centre, library and other busy areas of town. If successful it could be rolled out across to other locations.

Firefighters to undertake an extraordinary challenge: the FireCall Run.

Jay Taylor, a firefighter based at Richmond in North Yorkshire and former North Yorkshire firefighter, Robyn Foster, will run from Richmond fire station to every fire station in North Yorkshire raising funds for two deeply meaningful causes: The Fire Fighters Charity and VTRN Reset, an organisation supporting veterans’ transition to civilian life.

Robyn was previously a firefighter in North Yorkshire also based at Richmond fire station but now works for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

During the course of the run Jay and Robyn will cover over 420 miles in two weeks.

They will set off on this epic journey from Richmond fire station on May 18th 2025, and will head to Northallerton and Stokesley on their first day. The journey will continue over the next 13 days with key stops including Scarborough, Whitby, York, Harrogate, Skipton, Settle and Hawes.

In order to complete the challenge, they’ll need to run an average of 30 miles a day. No mean feat!

Jay says: “I wanted to do something to help support these two amazing charities and came up with the idea of running to every fire station within North Yorkshire.

“I’m a veteran of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and I’ve seen the struggles many face when leaving the military. VTRN Reset is doing incredible work to address this, and I’m proud to support their efforts.

“The Firefighters Charity provides vital support to colleagues and friends facing physical and mental health challenges, even helping one friend create precious family memories during terminal illness.”

Robyn said: “I am nervously excited about doing this challenge, I have never done anything like this before and really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a long two weeks but I'm sure the support we will receive will carry us through.

Jonathan Dyson, Chief Fire Officer of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, says: “We are immensely proud of Jay and former employee Robyn for undertaking this monumental challenge. Running 420 miles to every fire station in North Yorkshire is a testament to their commitment to serving others, both in the fire service and beyond. Their determination will undoubtedly inspire others and make a lasting impact on two vital causes. We’ll be cheering them on every step of the way!”

You can help support Jay and Robyn by donating through their JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/james-taylor-984

Do you want a career where you make a real difference to people’s lives? If the answer is yes have you thought about becoming a wholetime firefighter?

As a wholetime firefighter no two days are the same, one day you may be called out to an incident, and the next visiting schools and inspiring the next generation. Being a firefighter is so much more than fighting fires and you will play a huge role in educating the local community on fire safety and prevention methods.
