We’re thrilled to share that this year’s Wainwright Prize winners announcement will be held at Elmley Nature Reserve! 🌾

Bringing together this year’s brilliant shortlistees, inspiring judges, and supporters of nature and conservation writing, we’ll be celebrating the power of words to change how we see, and protect, the natural world. ✨📚

Set across 3,300 acres of wild coastal marshland on the Isle of Sheppey, Elmley is one of the UK’s leading landscape-scale conservation projects – a National Nature Reserve where forty years of restoration have created a haven for rare birds, raptors, hares and so much more. It’s a place built on the belief that people protect what they’ve experienced firsthand, which feels like exactly the right spirit for revealing this year’s winners.

We couldn’t imagine a more fitting setting to celebrate the books shaping how we see, and safeguard, the wild world. 🐦🌿

What if we stopped putting ourselves outside nature?

Shortlisted author challenges the idea that humans are inherently bad for nature. She explores our own place in the natural world, encouraging us to turn our curiosity towards ourselves and approach other people with the same grace, kindness and tolerance we extend to wildlife.

Her book, Love Is A Toad, is shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing.

What can ancient woods tell us about our relationship with nature?

Luke Barley takes us to Padley Gorge in the Peak District, an ancient woodland he has returned to throughout his life. He reflects on its deep connections to both nature and human history, and how people once lived and worked with the woods in ways that supported wildlife.

His book, Ancient, is shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing.
