Polling day is on Thursday 7th May. There are two vacancies in Beighton, so please don't forget to vote for both of your Labour candidates, Wayne Rhodes and Bridget Kelly.

This Election is going to be a very closely fought contest in Beighton ward. Only 2 votes separated Labour and the Lib Dems in 2024's local election, with the Lib Dems winning on the day. This year will also see the involvement of both Reform and Restore, with strong support for both.

We have the opportunity this time around to elect Beighton's first Labour councillors since our last win back in 2018. That's 7 years of Lib Dem victories in Beighton, Hackenthorpe, Sothall and Owlthorpe.

What exactly have the Lib Dems done to improve our local area in this time? Quite simply nothing at all.

Would Reform or Restore do any better?

Very doubtful.

You only have to look the number of Reform councillors elected in 2025, who have already stepped down, been suspended or switched to a different party. Over 70 of them at the last count. Beighton can't afford to risk this kind of chaos from it's elected representatives.

As your Labour candidates we have set out our plan for Beighton ward in our leaflets posted out to households over the last few weeks.

We want to clean up our streets, rebuild our communities and restore a sense of pride back in our neighbourhoods and ensure that no development whatsoever takes place on the contentious Eckington Way site

I grew up in a council house. Having a secure and affordable roof above our heads gave my parents the security they needed to raise a family.

I want to see more council housing in Sheffield to allow local people to live comfortably without the fear of insecure tenancies or unaffordable rents. This can be done through building new council homes, but also through the purchase of existing properties, including the re-purchase of ex-council homes sold under the Right to Buy scheme, which is something that the council is able to do.

I also want to see significant improvements to the council’s Housing Repair Service. A big part of my working day, as a constituency caseworker for our local MP Clive Betts, involves helping council tenants in dealing with the inadequacies of the current service.

It needs to do far better and I intend to make sure that it does just that.

Clean up our streets - Fly-tipping

A big part of our local election campaign is to Clean Up our Streets and this includes tackling fly-tipping in our local communities.

The Labour Government have just announced new powers for local authorities such as Sheffield City Council when dealing with fly-tipping

This includes

• New 'Clean up Squads' so if you get caught fly-tipping you will be made to clean it up yourself

• Enforcement notices, which if ignored could lead to up to 51 weeks in prison

• Penalty points on your driving licence if caught fly-tipping

• Fines in Sheffield doubled and now up to £1000

These are welcome changes to help deal with a problem that impacts us all by leaving our neighbourhoods looking a mess, as well as contaminating our community green spaces, encouraging rat infestations, and costing tax payers money to clear the mess left behind.

If elected, we will always stand strong against those who ruin our community with their discarded waste and punish them to the full measure of the law

After a considerable amount of pressure Amey have finally agreed to resurface the roundabout at Eckington Way and Drakehouse Lane.

The work will begin mid-May and will be completed over 2 nights.

A small amount of resurfacing work will also be taking place during May on Woodhouse Lane, between Robin Lane and Poplar Avenue, and also on Wyedale Croft.

I will keep applying the necessary pressure for High Street and one or two other prominent locations to be done as well, asap.

The surface of our roads is a patchwork of incomplete and inadequate repairs across Beighton, Hackenthorpe, Sothall and Owlthorpe.

Potholes have been a massive problem throughout the winter. The complete breakdown in the maintenance of our road surfaces over the last few months, following an unseasonal wet period of weather has shown that the current plan of action is not working.

Amey have recently announced that they will be using a new stronger filler for temporary pothole repairs. This is positive news, but it is also a bit of a confession that prior to this switch the council were happy to allow substandard repairs on our roads.

This is not acceptable. Our roads need to be maintained far better than they currently are. If elected, we will both fight hard to ensure all council services are performing to the highest standards possible and not cutting corners in this manner.

I'm old enough to remember how good our bus services were back in the day before privatisation. As a kid, you could get on the bus for 2p and go absolutely anywhere you wanted.

We had a public transport system to be proud of back then. Cheap, reliable and went where you needed it to go. It will be fantastic to get back to that level after franchising kicks in in 2027 and local services come back under public control.

An extended tram service is also essential for the future of our city. I fully support the plans to open up the Barrow Hill line to a new tram-train service with a station in Beighton village itself.

Add to this free bus and tram travel for children and young people under the age of 18 and we are definitely heading in the right direction !!

Clean up our streets - Litter

Why do some people think it's ok to just chuck their litter out of their car window whilst driving through our local area.

Roadside litter is a real problem on some of our busier roads. Local volunteer litter pickers mentioned something called LitterCam to me when I met with them last month.

LitterCam is made by a company in Yorkshire and It's basically roadside CCTV with AI and number plate recognition software which picks up roadside littering offences and enables local authorities to issue fines to offending motorists.

We've approached Sheffield Council about LitterCam and they have agreed to look into the scheme and to speak to a number of other local authorities who have recently run pilot schemes for LitterCam, to see how effective it's been and whether it would be beneficial for Sheffield to run a pilot scheme of their own.

If elected, we will push for any future pilot scheme to be run in our area and hopefully cover roads such as the A57, Donestk Way, Moss Way and Eckington Way.
