After a challenging summer, recent rainfall is bringing some much-needed grass growth, but patience is key as fields start to green up.

🐄 Don’t graze too hard, too soon
Allow grass to reach the three-leaf stage to maximise autumn grazing and support ley resilience.

🌱 Reintroduce livestock gradually
After months on alternative rations, a sudden switch to lush, low-fibre grass can upset rumen stability. Ease
animals back onto grazing.

💧 Don’t forget magnesium
Fresh grass, combined with autumn weather, can increase the risk of deficiency, so consider whether additional supplementation is needed.

🌱 Think ahead
Younger leys have shown good drought resilience and are recovering faster, so increased reseeding could be worth considering.

🌽 Maize harvest is already underway for some farms, while others are still waiting for the right conditions. With this season's unpredictable weather, protecting silage quality has never been more important. 🐄

A recent trial carried out at Coastland College Farm, in partnership with Mole Valley Farmers and Rumenco, showed some fantastic results using NovaSile CS silage additive.

Despite challenging conditions, including a very dry maize crop, the farm recorded cool, stable silage with virtually no spoilage, helping to protect valuable feed quality and reduce waste.

The benefits included:
✅ Improved silage stability
✅ Reduced feed losses
✅ Better energy retention
✅ Lower concentrate use
✅ Strong milk production and improved milk protein levels

⚠️ Silage Safety Warning ⚠️

Freshly ensiled maize can produce nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) during the early stages of fermentation. This yellow/brown gas is highly toxic and can be potentially fatal to both people and livestock.
Recent drought conditions may increase the risk, as stressed crops can accumulate excess nitrates before harvest.

Key points to remember:
🔸 Nitrogen dioxide can cause severe and permanent respiratory damage
🔸 The gas is heavier than air and can collect in clamps, sheds and feed passages
🔸 Nitrogen dioxide can also be clear in colour, giving little warning of its presence
🔸 Poorly ventilated areas, particularly indoor clamps, are at greater risk
🔸 The risk comes from inhalation, not ingestion
🔸 Silage is generally considered safe to feed after around 10 days, although caution should always be exercised

If exposure is suspected, seek medical attention immediately.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at our Dorchester Mill open evening on Tuesday.

We were delighted to welcome more than 70 local farmers to see first-hand the recent £1.6 million investment in the site, meet the Mole Valley Farmers team, and learn more about the products, services and support available across the Dorchester area.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase how this investment is helping to strengthen local feed production and enhance the support we provide to farming businesses across Dorset and the surrounding area.

🌽 With maize harvest well underway across the region, we are looking back at a crop that was harvested on the 14th August in Taunton.

Having taken a sample fresh out the forager the analysis shows that dry matter % is up with starch levels nearly where they should be. Considering the challenges all crops have faced this year, this is a positive result. However with dry matters being slightly higher than we would like, it is important you use a proven silage additive like Volac Ecocool to keep the mycotoxin risk to a minimum.

From variety selection and crop nutrition to harvest timing and clamp management, every stage contributes to the quality of forage ultimately fed to livestock.
