Grass growth has eased back slightly to approximately 70kg DM/ha/day, but that’s still improved on this time last year and the longer-term averages of 60kg DM/ha/day. Grass dry matter content has dropped back to 18-19% dry matter on average.

Whilst sugar (9.3%) and fibre (NDF – 43.8%) levels are quite similar to last week, the overall energy value (‘ME’) has dropped again to approximately 11.2MJ kg/DM, so performance expectations need to be realistic, for both lactating and growing animals with appropriate supplementation. Appropriate pre and post grazing topping will be important in maintaining grass quality as the summer progresses.

Crude protein levels remain low averaging approximately 19%.

Depending on grazing availability, other prevailing conditions and stage of lactation, daytime grazing might support only maintenance, whereas full grazing realistically near M+13-15 litres, down again a couple of litres on last week.

We’re pleased to share details of the upcoming NSA Sheep South West Chairman’s Farm Walk and Industry Discussion, hosted by the Stephens family at Swannaton Farm.

The Stephens family are long-standing Mole Valley Farmers customers, and we’re proud to support them and their enterprises.

Taking place on Wednesday 17th June 2026, the afternoon will include a guided farm walk, insights into the family’s sheep and cattle enterprises and an open Q&A with industry leaders Phil Stocker, NSA Chief Executive, and Russell Steer, Kivells Director.
