🏳️‍🌈 A QUESTION AFTER SOUTHAMPTON PRIDE

Most people do not care what consenting adults do in their private lives. Everyone deserves equal treatment, dignity and protection from genuine discrimination.

But today’s event raised legitimate questions.

When a supposedly family, friendly celebration includes adults in fetish-style clothing, gimp masks and overtly sexual outfits around children, where is the boundary? Personal freedom matters—but ordinary standards of age-appropriate public behaviour should apply equally to everyone.

The wider political message also deserves scrutiny. Acceptance cannot mean compelled language, unquestioned changes to women’s sport and sex-based spaces, ideological workplace policies or immunity from criticism. Activist overreach risks creating the very division it then presents as evidence of oppression.

There is also a local accountability question. With Southampton playing at home, five cruise ships in port and existing roadworks already placing pressure on the city, what did today’s road closures, traffic management, policing, council support and clean-up cost, and was the disruption properly coordinated?

Equal rights? Absolutely.

Special treatment, compelled agreement and different standards? No.

Real inclusion means freedom, responsibility and one standard for everybody.

🚦 SOUTHAMPTON TRAFFIC UPDATE 🚦

Traffic is particularly heavy across Southampton today, especially around the Itchen Bridge and routes into the city centre.

Several major events are taking place at the same time:

-Southampton FC host Millwall at St Mary’s at 3pm ⚽️
-Southampton Pride is taking place across the city centre
-Five cruise ships are currently in port and scheduled to depart later today ⛴️
-Ongoing maintenance around the Itchen Bridge may also add pressure to surrounding routes 🚧

Further congestion is likely before the match and again from approximately 4:45pm, when football traffic begins leaving the city and the cruise ships are departing.

Please allow extra time, check your route before travelling and take care on the roads.

Local pressure gets results.

Residents had been dealing with a water leak for almost two months after a faulty meter issue, with water continuing to run down the road and little progress being made.

Cllr Ross Mould kept pushing Southern Water for action and, when that still wasn’t getting anywhere, raised the issue with the Daily Echo.

The story was published — and the following day the leak was fixed.

Sometimes it takes persistence, pressure and making sure residents’ concerns are heard.

Well done Ross for sticking with it and helping get the issue resolved.

From spring 2027, Martyn’s Law is expected to place new counterterrorism responsibilities on thousands of public premises—including pubs, clubs, entertainment venues and community spaces here in Southampton.

Given the current security threat, sensible emergency procedures are clearly necessary. But Southampton businesses and residents should also be asking:

Are we tackling terrorism at its source, or transferring the cost and responsibility for managing the consequences onto local businesses?

Preparedness can save lives, and this should not detract from the campaign led by Martyn Hett’s mother following the Manchester Arena attack. But new regulation must not become a camouflage net covering failures in intelligence, border security, radicalisation prevention and offender management.

Protection at the venue is necessary. Accountability at the source is equally necessary.

What do Southampton residents and business owners think, necessary protection, displacement of responsibility, or both?
