SATVIR KAUR MP

Whilst it’s back to school week for kids across Southampton, it’s also back to Parliament week for MPs! 🎒

Great to be back after a full and productive summer in Southampton. An historic day today, with Andy Burnham giving his first Prime Minister’s Questions to a packed Commons Chamber. 💪🏾

Excited to be back and for all there is to come! ✨

Out and about in Lordswood today with Councillor Greenhalgh and another Labour colleague.

It was lovely to hear so many positive stories about what Labour has achieved locally. One that particularly stood out was the positive action taken to address children and young people riding motorbikes and scooters through the sports centre and Lordshill Centre at speed. Not to mention in the actual neighbourhoods.

A big thank you to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary for listening to our concerns and taking action. Thank you also to the parents who have spoken to their children about riding motorbikes and scooters in public areas. It is reassuring to hear that this antisocial behaviour appears to be calming down slowly but surely.

Councillor Greenhalgh also has plenty of new casework to take forward, ranging from illegal parking to overgrown and potentially dangerous tree branches. The list is endless.

I enjoy working locally with Councillor Greenhalgh; the work is about listening to residents and addressing the issues affecting people locally. It is reassuring to see that, by working together, positive change really is achievable.

Full steam ahead to fast-track more homes

Thousands of new homes will be built around England’s train, tram and underground stations, helping families to live closer to work, schools and transport.

The common-sense changes to planning rules will fast-track quality homes in well-connected areas, making better use of underdeveloped land around stations. At the same time, this approach will create jobs, drive growth and connect communities.

📢 Disable people in Southampton can use their free bus passes at any time of day.

Right now, if you wanted to travel before 9:30am you would have to pay. This is simply not fair and I’m pleased Labour is acting to right this wrong. It’s about helping people access healthcare, get to work, and easing the cost of living.

This is on top of free bus travel for kids aged 5-15 this August, the extension to the 16-17 railcard, and the £2 bus cap.

Lots done, lots more to do!

Andy Burnham promised to end rough sleeping and he’s delivering.

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Tackling rough sleeping isn’t just about providing a roof over someone’s head; it’s about offering the support people need to rebuild their lives.

Labour is committed to creating a fairer society where no one is left behind. There is still more to do, but this is a positive step in the right direction. 🌹

Has only been a few days since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister, but he’s already started taking action.

✅ Bringing back the £2 bus fare cap to help make travel more affordable.
✅ Removing VAT from household electricity bills to help reduce energy costs.
✅ Cutting business rates by 20% for pubs, social clubs and live music venues to support local businesses and our high streets.
✅ Pausing the planned early release of prisoners while the policy is urgently reviewed.
✅ Announcing £340 million to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping.
✅ Making it clear that this will be a “cost of living government”, with the focus on helping working people and rebuilding public services.

These are only the first few days, and we are so excited we just can’t hide it 🎉🎉🎉🎉

A New Chapter for Our Country 🌹🌹🌹

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter as Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister following Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to step down.

We want to thank Sir Keir Starmer for his dedication, leadership and service to both the Labour Party and our country. Leading through challenging times is never easy, and his commitment to public service is appreciated.

We also congratulate Prime Minister Andy Burnham as he takes on this enormous responsibility. Many people will be looking to him to build on Labour’s values of fairness, opportunity and social justice, while tackling the issues that matter most to communities like ours in Coxford including the cost of living, safe neighbourhoods, good housing, quality public services and opportunities for young people.

Here in Coxford, Labour will continue to work hard for local residents, listen to your concerns and stand up for our community.

Congratulations, Prime Minister Andy Burnham. We wish you every success in serving our country.
