Does it mean you will oppose building on agricultural Green Belt land such as at Bournes Green (If so let the Southend Labour council administration know), and will you be pressing your own Government to reverse the changes to agricultural property relief (family farm tax)? Bayo Alaba MP

🚜 Earlier this month, I met with both the National Farmers Union and the Countryside Alliance to discuss the issues facing farming families right here in Southend East and Rochford.

I know times are tough for those who work hard to feed the rest of us, and I’m committed to doing what I can to support them.

Great visit to Southend's CCTV control room, seeing how the camera network helps keep our community safe, keeps traffic flowing, supports the police and tackles antisocial behaviour across the city. Five of our councillors went along as well as Cllr Meg Davidson of the Conservatives, and no, she hasn't defected to Reform! 😉

Was great to see so many people turn up today for the Southend Business show 2026
Lots of local companies there promoting themselves. Local businesses are an essential part of our great City and the more support they get, the better the City.
I even got to stand by a cup I know Southend United fans are very proud of

🟩 Green Belt Update 🟩

The wording used when refusing a planning application is very important, as we need to put forward a strong argument to ensure the Government does not approve the application upon appeal.

When Reform spearheaded the refusal of the Bournes Green housing application a couple of weeks ago, we warned the Council that they were rushing the drafting of the wording and it was at risk of not being strong enough.

We have unfortunately been proven right. After sending the original argument to the Government Minister, the Council asked us to approve slightly amended wording at the Planning Committee meeting tonight.

This wording still wasn't good enough, so Reform put forward our own, much stronger argument.

The Conservatives supported our wording, but Labour voted against it and the Green member of the committee was absent. Therefore, it was unfortunately defeated.

We will now be sending a second weak argument to the Minister, and will have to wait and see what happens. If the Minister ends up approving the application, Southend Labour will have a lot to answer for.
