Questions have been raised about the Statue of Minerva, which has stood atop Hyde Library for the past 129 years, watching over Hyde Town Centre.

I made some enquiries today with the council’s estates department and have been informed that the people who purchased the old Hyde Library building now own the statue. I did raise concerns that, although the artist’s impressions suggest they hope to retain the front façade of the building, the Statue of Minerva does not appear in any of the drawings.

The council is now checking this with the new owners. If the statue cannot remain in its current position, it would be wonderful to see it preserved and relocated elsewhere in Hyde as an important reminder of our town’s history.

Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, commerce and the arts. The Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Athena, she symbolises intellect, justice, rational thought and defensive strength.

I’ll keep you updated as I learn more.
