⚠️ Urgent warning for parents from Nottinghamshire Trading Standards ⚠️

❌ Please do not microwave squishy toys!

A dangerous social media trend is urging children to put silicone squishy toys in the microwave, to make them softer and more pliable. Please don’t let them do it.

‼️ The toys get dangerously hot inside, even though they remain cool on the outside. If squeezed they can explode, spraying boiling gel and leading to severe burns, hospital admissions, and lasting scars.

🗣️ Please talk to children about these risks and share this message to keep others safe.

🏡The right to housing is a fundamental right. And yet, a shortage of social housing, inflated house prices and rising rent levels have undermined this right for many people in the UK.

Join us on Saturday, 30 May from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m in the Plessey Centre, Beeston Rylands for our first HOUSING WORKSHOP

📣 Hear from our local Broxtowe Alliance Cllr Vanessa Smith about the forward thinking social housing policies of Broxtowe.

🤝Engage with social scientist Isabelle Coldicott and her critical reflections about what more could be done.

🗣️Discuss with activists from ACORN Nottingham the plight of renters and how we can improve the situation on the rental market.

This is a workshop about developing progressive ideas of how to handle the increasingly pressing housing crisis in the UK today & what can be done.

All are welcome! Spread the word!

Lovely to see so many people out and about in Stapleford today.

It was great to attend the community day at St Helen’s Church, which was a real hive of activity, followed by a felting class at Cliff Hill Community Centre, hosted by sarah Camplin.

Our town always has something to offer, and it’s wonderful to see so many local groups and residents coming together.

This week we unveiled the plaque to remember the 76 miners who lost their lives at Moorgreen Colliery between 1868–1951

Moorgreen was a significant pit in the Eastwood area, with 25 pits operating within 3 miles at one time. The pit finally closed on July 19, 1985.

The site was transformed into Colliers Wood, which now acts as a nature reserve and memorial site to the mining community.

Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic said, “Reclaiming Colliers Wood and converting it into a local nature reserve was one of my first projects after I became Council Leader in 1995, and it’s been such a joy to see it through to what it’s become today. As we approach 30 years since the site was reopened, it’s important that we continue to recognise and preserve the site’s industrial heritage

Statement from Broxtowe Borough Council and Councillor Vanessa Smith, Portfolio Holder for Housing:

We are aware of a fire related incident at Fishpond Cottage last night. Officers have visited the site and arrangements are being made to make it secure. There was minor damage to an external door.

There have been a number of similar incidents at vacant Council sites recently and we are working with partners including Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue and Nottinghamshire Police to monitor the situation, including the installation of monitoring equipment to deter future incidents.

The incident does not impact on the existing plans for the site to construct two flats to provide homes for Council tenants.
