Today, crews from Staveley Fire Station took part in a joint training exercise with South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue at Graves Park in Sheffield.

The exercise focused on pumping operations and cross-border working, giving firefighters from both services the opportunity to train together, share knowledge, and strengthen the partnerships that help us respond effectively when incidents cross county boundaries.

It was also a special day for our station as our wholetime crew officially welcomed their new Enhanced Rescue Vehicle into service. This brand-new appliance brings additional capabilities to support a wide range of emergency incidents and represents a significant investment in protecting our communities.

We captured a unique photograph showing three generations of fire appliances that have served the station over the years, highlighting how firefighting equipment and technology continue to evolve while our commitment to the community remains the same.

🌊 Please help us share this important safety message 🌊

Following the tragic incident at Rother Valley Country Park this week, we are asking parents, carers and families to speak with young people about the dangers of open water.

Sadly, that incident was not the only one across the UK, with several other fatal water incidents involving young people reported in recent days.

As adults, many of us understand the risks associated with lakes, rivers, reservoirs and quarries, but young people can often underestimate just how dangerous open water can be, especially during warm weather.

Even on hot days, the water can remain dangerously cold. Hidden hazards, sudden drops, strong currents and cold water shock can quickly overwhelm even strong swimmers.

Please take a moment to have those important conversations with your children, family members and friends:
• Avoid entering open water to cool off
• Never jump into unknown water
• Know what to do if things go wrong

If you find yourself struggling in the water:

Tilt your head back, keep your ears submerged, relax and try to control your breathing until the effects of cold water shock pass.

If you see somebody in difficulty in the water:
đźš« Do not enter the water yourself
📞 Call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service

Please help us spread this message throughout our community.

🌊 If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember: Float to Live 🌊

Cold water shock can happen to anyone. Your instinct may be to swim hard or panic, but the safest thing to do is:

âś” Tilt your head back
âś” Relax and try to control your breathing
âś” Move your hands to help you stay afloat
âś” Once calm, call for help or swim to safety if you can

Floating buys you time and could save your life.

Whether you’re at the coast, a lake, river or reservoir, take care around open water, especially as the warmer weather brings more people outdoors.

Please share this message with friends and family. It could help save a life.

Busy day for the on-call crew at Staveley Fire Station today đźš’

This morning started with a breathing apparatus drill to support the development of one of our firefighters, focusing on teamwork, communication and safe working practices in realistic scenarios.

The crew then carried out some local topography training to refresh knowledge of the area, access points and local risks.

This afternoon we headed over to Poolsbrook Country Park for pumping practice before finishing the day gathering site specific risk information from local premises.

A varied training day covering operational skills, local knowledge and risk information gathering for the on-call crew.

Earlier this afternoon, Staveley’s on-call crew joined Red Watch to mark Firefighters’ Memorial Day.

Together, we took time to remember and honour firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

It was a moment to pause, reflect and recognise the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of those who gave everything to protect others.

Our thoughts remain with their families, friends and colleagues.
