Texas launches official map of haunted locations, UFO sightings and cryptid legends
The Texas Department of Transportation has introduced an interactive map highlighting locations associated with reported hauntings, UFO encounters, mysterious creatures and local folklore.
Launched on 5 October 2026, the map features a special section called the “Phantom Layer”, allowing visitors to explore some of the state’s most unusual legends.
Featured locations include a supposedly haunted hotel in Mineral Wells, an alleged UFO crash site dating back to 1897 and several locations associated with unexplained sightings.
The project was developed using historical research, local accounts and reports gathered by transport department employees.
The map is intended to document folklore and unusual stories rather than verify supernatural activity. It will remain available after Halloween.
Should the UK introduce its own official map of haunted locations?
