Get your tickets for the inaugural Potteries Film Festival, kicking off in less than two weeks!

Using cinema to celebrate working class history and culture across the Potteries, this jam-packed weekend provides an opportunity learn and cherish a long history of working class struggles in our region, from Chartism and the 1926 general strike, to the late, great F***y Deakin and the North Staffordshire Miners’ Wives Group.

Visit the link in our bio 🔗 and grab ya tickets. We’ll be there loud and proud. Also give the Potteries Film Festival a follow! ✊

Join us to shape the future of our new organisation, to plot a journey to brighter days ahead. Whatever your experience of politics or community work, whether seasoned campaigner or curious novice, be you jaded cynic or energetic idealist, we have much to offer each other and we want you with us. Our route will take us deep into our communities across North Staffordshire, working together to learn once more the arts of good neighbourhood and common cause. Our lodestar is a renewed community, with a good life and self-determination for all. Yesterday’s results in the Newcastle Borough Council elections are a tough pill to swallow but well done to everyone who threw their weight into the election locally. There will be more local elections next year and we will have our chance to think about how we can prepare for what’s ahead.

But the real ‘winner’ this time was ‘didn’t vote’, which got more than all other votes combined in almost every single ward in Newcastle. The prospect of a Reform UK council is frightening, but the real battle isn’t necessarily just against a petty minority of dyed-in-the-wool racists. There’s a big majority of people out there who want for more than just the ear of a sympathetic councillor, and have been dispossessed of the capacity to act together to improve their lives. They are our people.

There’s an old socialist slogan, ‘don’t mourn, organise’. It’s not for us. Mourn all you want, this is a defeat and grief is important. But we’re all here, ready to console each other, ready to build together. Use this grief as a tool to prepare for the tasks ahead, to fight more battles for sure, but also to reach out to our people and to bring about a better future for all of us. Grieve, rage, and then organise.

Massive power to for running an exciting, energetic and principled set of local campaigns. Give them a follow and stay tuned to hear more about Bread & Roses’ upcoming plans.

Always neighbours, never strangers 🫶

Every news story feels like a punch in the gut lately. Trump’s wars. Scandal after scandal. Prices go up. Your Royal Stoke appointment gets postponed. Rent spirals, while they build big houses for the wealthy. Like Walleys Quarry, too often things are done to us. Our fear, anger and sadness grow because we’ve been abandoned.

Reform UK may do well in the Newcastle council election on 7 May. But Reform UK are the Tories in new clothes and even more dangerous. They and their billionaire backers want to distract us while they sell off our NHS to their US mates, chainsaw our public services, and make our country poorer, angrier and sadder. They hate migrants and are racist. If you live here, you’re from here and our neighbour.

Our town has a proud history of fighters. F***y Deakin fought hard for working class people and Newcastle. F***y also knew how to fight fascists. She stood up to Oswald Mosley, the Farage of her day. Together, we’ll carry on F***y’s fight with honesty & care. We’re neighbours never strangers 🫶

Councils have fallen apart since austerity. Most people don’t bother with local elections. Labour’s over. But you can vote Green today. The Greens want to take on the companies, bosses, landlords and elites who rob us blind. Make hope normal again. Vote Green.

Last week we met together and founded Bread & Roses, the North Staffs People’s Community Coalition.

We have built a strong and vibrant community of organisers and activists from across North Staffordshire, and we all felt strongly that we should continue this together.

Participating in Your Party brought us all together, and we will continue to lend our support to all principled candidates from leftwing parties. Crucially, as the Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council election approaches, we encourage everyone to canvass and vote for the Greens.

But our focus will not just be on elections. Our people have been abandoned, and we will be organising throughout our communities to improve people’s lives, meet people’s needs and prove that change is possible. We believe that transforming our society in the interests of working class people isn’t just possible, but urgently necessary. However, it has to be fought for and that will be our focus.

Our social media will transition over the coming days to Bread&Roses, and we hope you will stay with us on this journey to a future which organises for solidarity and repair throughout our communities.

More details and plans for Bread&Roses will be forthcoming very soon. If you would like to get involved, drop us a message. The link to our provisional mission statement can be found in our bio 🔗

On 24th March, after a fruitful and honest conversation regarding the future for Your Party Stoke and Newcastle, we voted to leave Your Party and explore other options.

As a direct result of this we have chosen, as an organised group, to suspend our support for Your Party, pending a further meeting to decide a future direction.

Those who want to continue supporting Your Party locally will be able to get involved with official branches when the national party sets them up. However, there has been a collective feeling within our group for sometime now that the national party’s political culture is too toxic, it is obstructing our organising efforts locally, we have lost people who have not wanted to carry on being involved, and we want a positive, outwards-looking project to commit ourselves to.

Two options that received the strongest support in discussion were joining the Green Party or forming a local socialist club that could prioritise community organising and networking.

We have decided to meet next week to make a final decision. If people have ideas about what we should be doing next, we urge you to both attend the meeting and make your feelings felt through our regular channels beforehand.

Where are we now? Where are we heading?

Members of Your Party Stoke & Newcastle have not yet had a chance to have an open discussion about how we all feel after the events within Your Party nationally and locally over the last few months. This next branch meeting will be an opportunity for us to think through these big questions together and to collectively decide upon a direction going forward. Come and join this conversation to share your thoughts and feelings and hear from others.

If you have any items you’d like to be added to the agenda, please get in touch by 19/3/26.

We are HERE TO STAY.

Join us for our next public meeting, where we will be discussing how we build a practical anti-racist culture throughout our city and region with Kojo Kyerewaa (Black Lives Matter UK national organiser) and Kip Hedges (long time socialist, union activist and active in the battle against ICE in Minneapolis). There will be workshops, Q&A and group discussions.

Nigel Farage’s brand of toxic racism dominates the airwaves. Just last year, off the back of fascist riots up and down the country, London witnessed the largest far-right demonstration in its history.

All of this is made worse by Keir Starmer’s hapless Labour Party constantly pandering to racism, dishing out authoritarianism upon refugees, migrants, and Muslims alike.

We need a politics which stands side-by-side with all those in our communities who are under racist attack. For Your Party Stoke & Newcastle, if you live here, you’re from here, and you are our neighbour.

Bring a friend, we’ll see you there. ✊🏼
