A retired Staffordshire firefighter has designs on raising funds for the Royal British Legion once again in the build-up to Remembrance Day.

Kelvin Chell, from Audley, Newcastle-under-Lyme, has raised more than £140,000 in six years for the Poppy Appeal through his bespoke enamel poppy badges.

In 2025 alone, he raised a massive £50,000.

His pins with purpose are now on sale for £4 at locations across the county, with new designs for 2026 representing Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service and Staffordshire Police.

This year Kelvin has even designed a bespoke JCB digger-themed pin badge after teaming up with JCB and Fenton-based JCB supplier Rayne Engineering.

Kelvin, whose customised Staffordshire poppies were first made in 2020, with the initial design including a Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service cap badge, said: “There are 15 new designs available to choose from this year.

“Each year the demand for these unique poppies increases and they’re now being sent all over the world. This week photos were posted of them in Australia. Some are even on the way to a fire station on Vancouver Island in Canada.

“With this year’s additions, the total number of designs in the collection is 38 - my long-term favourite being the Spitfire.

“I’m amazed how a simple idea has escalated into allowing me to raise over £140,000 for the Royal British Legion and I would like to thank the Chief Fire Officer of Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service for his support and assistance in this charity event.”

We are reminding people to take care in areas of deep mud and water after crews rescued a member of the public in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Crews were called at 7.25pm on Tuesday (6 October) to a pond off Lymes Road following reports that an individual was stuck up to their knees in mud.

Crews attended the scene and formed a rescue path to reach the individual who was then checked over by paramedics.

A huge congratulations to 18-year-old Lucas, who has received a special award for helping to rescue two people from a car following a collision 👏

On 12 July, Lucas and his dad came across a collision in Burton-upon-Trent.

Despite having no previous emergency service experience, Lucas helped to remove two trapped casualties from an overturned vehicle and assisted in moving them to safety.

Well done, Lucas! ♥️ 👏

Firefighters were called to factory in Stafford yesterday after workers reported seeing a haze, thought to be smoke.

We were called at 7.10pm yesterday (Tuesday 6 October) to Ranshaw Drive, after the caller reported seeing smoke coming from a building.

Four appliances and an aerial ladder platform (ALP) attended the scene.

The ALP was used to examine the building for fire risk whilst firefighters used thermal imaging cameras and gas monitors to investigate and monitor conditions inside and outside the building.

Thankfully, nobody was injured.

Meet Snowy, a 23-year-old horse who was rescued from a ditch on Monday 🐴

Crews worked to remove branches from around Snowy, before putting straps around him to lift him from the ditch.

Snowy has been closely monitored by a vet and was able walk himself back into his stable to rest and recover following the ordeal ♥️

The crew from Abbots Bromley came to Stafford recently to train in a range of areas ⬇️

Last night (28/09/26) the crew visited Stafford Fire Station to carry out some training relating to our potential response to a fire in a Tall Building. We practiced how we would get water to an upper floor using internal pipework called a Dry Riser fitted to many Tall Buildings. Before heading back we also used Stafford's Breathing Apparatus (BA) training facility to enable Firefighters Stanley & Kibbey to further develop their skills in the use of Breathing Apparatus and associated equipment.
