Citrus Housing

Citrus Housing Working to provide housing and dignity to disabled and marginalised people. We're a group of queer and disabled people in Swansea and Manchester.

Together, co-operatively, we plan to provide ourselves places to live. We will be our own landlord. Since we're a fully mutual co-operative, we all have an equal say. Because most of us are disabled, we will make our houses accessible. And because the future is important for all of us, we will make them sustainable.

Being disabled often means a disproportionate amount of our physical, mental, and organisational energy can end up having to go just into getting our most basic needs met.

And this means repairs and maintenance in our households can look different than one might otherwise expect. If your energy is constantly being taken up by trying to maintain regular access to food, hydration, and hygiene, you can't always divert as much focus to the spaces around you. Things build up. Houses and possessions might get more damaged by increased wear and tear from coordination issues, neurological impulse control difficulties, financial constraints (disabled people's lives tend to be more expensive), or struggles with regular maintenance. Tasks accumulate. Sometimes we're aware of it and it really bothers us, other times we don't have the capacity or energy to be entirely aware of it, but in those cases it often still bothers us anyway.

Often there's an additional obstacle of feeling embarrassed or ashamed of asking for help, or of letting an outsider see the damage in the first place in order to be able to come in and repair it.

We're currently in the process of doing a 'repair blitz' for some of our members. We're helping get the materials for maintenance or upgrades that some want to handle themselves, and we're bringing in professionals for as many other carpentry, waste clearance, redecoration, and general repair tasks as the households identify and flag up. No shame, no judgement, and striving for maximal empathy, dignity, and autonomy over which tasks get prioritised and how they get sorted. People's lives are being made more manageable.

One year ago today, we moved members of our coop into our first house. A lot's happened since these photos were taken, and it's been a good year.

Today, we had notice that we've secured the funding to buy our second house. We're going places (and the next place is an eight bedroom Georgian B&B in Haverfordwest) . Can you support us as we house more disabled and marginalised people?

You can donate to us at https://ko-fi.com/citrushousing — or if you feel you've got the resources, why not talk to us about investing? Drop us a message if you're interested.

One of the big obstacles some of us have as disabled people who need to access 'professional' type spaces is finding clothes which look suitable and which we're physically able to wear. It's always great to see more people talking about this!

In this episode of 3Spoonies, we’re talking about adaptive clothing — what it is, why it matters, and why clothing access is about dignity, independence, and energy, not just fashion. With our fabulous guest Hanan Tantush of Intotum Fashion!

Adaptive clothing is often treated as niche, medical, or optional. But for disabled people, chronically ill people, and neurodivergent people, what we wear can affect how we feel about ourselves.
This episode isn’t about trends or “inspiration”.

It’s about the reality of getting dressed when your body doesn’t fit the assumptions clothing is designed around.

As disabled people who are also multiply marginalised, we face a higher bar of effort to clear to be seen as 'respectable' by a lot of society. We're faced with additional challenges to be interpreted as 'professional.' I think this can be both a struggle but also in some ways an advantage; we have direct experience of more types of oppression. This makes it easier for us to understand how those oppressions operate in the world and how they relate to each other. I'm hoping that will help to keep us more accountable, and more conscious that the point isn't to pull the ladder up behind us but instead to build a massive lift.

We're going to a conference next week about building new homes. What would new build homes or new build towns that are intentional about addressing oppression and marginalisation look like? What would you want councils or funders or the government or architects or builders to know, or to prioritise, or to think about? Is there anything you want us to tell people?

We're trying out something new!

Starting this Thursday (26th March!) Kai and Marn will be streaming their joint foray into the hit post-industrial walking simulator, Disco Elysium.

It's a computer game about being a cop assigned to investigate a mrder case in an economically abandoned rundown seaside town, with no memory, a questionable skill tree, and a niche fashion sense. Marn has never played it before, Kai has played it a bunch of times but will be resisting any urges toward giving plot spoilers.

They'll be on Twitch on Thursday nights, at https://m.twitch.tv/marnanelthurman at 10pm GMT (UK time), 5pm EST (American).

[Image is a poster advertising Marn and Kai (humans) and Cube (dog) streaming Disco Elysium on Twitch, in aid of Citrus Housing Co-op, on Thursday at 10pm GMT UK time, 5pm EST American time. The poster has the date as 26 02 26 but that's a typo, we're starting just now in March, we promise!]
