What is stock discrepancy and how does it impact my business?

Stock discrepancy happens when the actual on-hand stock, i.e. physical stock is different from the quantity recorded in an inventory system. These discrepancies can be caused by poor data entry and management, theft or general user error. Undetected stock discrepancies can result in lost sales, overstocking and poor customer service.

Regular stocktaking will provide actual physical stock counts and highlight where there are discrepancies.

Regular stocktakes highlight when you are holding too much stock. Too much stock - surely that's a good thing, right? Wrong and here's why;

1) increased capital costs; money used to buy stock ties up your capital and means you may be unable to take advantage of opportunities that come your way, replace / update equipment and technology or take on new staff.

2) storage space; increased stock = increased space.

3) service costs; insurance, security and physically handling the stock.

4) stock risks; stock may fall in value if stored for long periods or worse still become out of date.
