Corners can cause trouble in a crab pot!

With square or cornered wire pots, crabs can crowd into dead spots and stress each other. The round profile of Hayes Pots is designed to reduce those corners, helping crabs move more freely and making the release of undersized or protected muddies cleaner and less stressful.

It is a simple idea that came from Jeff Hayes’ practical crabbing experience, not a desk. The patented design aims to support better handling and survivability, but no pot can guarantee an outcome. Handle every crab carefully and release it promptly.

Warmer water and drier weather can make overnight crabbing worth a look : but the basics still matter.

The Hayes Overnight Pot is designed for longer sets, giving your bait more time in the water while you get some sleep. Its broad mesh body, blue flotation ring, central entry and galvanised outer ring are designed for practical handling in real crabbing conditions.

Before you drop it:
• Check the tide, weather and local rules
• Secure the bait, rope and float
• Make sure the pot is sitting properly
• Mark it correctly and retrieve it as early as required

Warmer conditions may change crab movement, but there are no guarantees. Location, bait and a properly set pot still matter.

Before the boat leaves the ramp, take a few minutes to check your bait, gear and catch rules.

Queensland gear restrictions apply to help prevent overfishing. In tidal waters, you can use up to 4 crab pots or dillies per person, or a combination of both. Hooking crabs is illegal.

Bait caught for use as bait must still comply with recreational fishing rules, including size, possession, closed-season and other requirements. No-take species cannot be used as bait.

Identify your catch before deciding what to keep. Undersized, oversized, no-take or closed-season species should be returned to the water immediately to give them the best chance of survival. Check current closed waters and seasons before leaving, and use the official Qld Fishing 2.0 app to help identify species and confirm the rules.

A pot can be in the right spot and still walk or slide when the tide gets moving.

Soft mud, undertow, not enough rope for the tide height, extra drag from a poorly set float, or not enough legal weight can all shift your gear out of the feeding zone.

Before you drop:
• Check the bottom type. Soft mud gives gear less to hold on to.
• Allow enough rope for the full tide height and current conditions.
• Use additional weight only where it is legal and genuinely needed.
• Set the floats so the rope is not dragging the pot downstream.
• After a big tide swing, retrieve and reset if you think the pot has moved.

The Hayes flotation-ring design is intended to help the pot sit in the feeding zone and remain more stable. It is a design aim, not a guarantee, conditions on the day still matter.

Before the pot hits the water, make sure you know the rules.

In Queensland tidal waters, you can use up to 4 crab pots or dillies per person. Each must be tagged with the user’s surname and full address, and connected to a solid, light-coloured float at least 15cm in every dimension, marked with the surname. Check your gear regularly so unwanted crabs and bycatch can be released alive.

For mud crabs, the minimum size is 15cm. The possession limit is 7 per person, or 14 per boat when 2 or more people are on board. Female mud crabs are no-take and must be returned immediately. Mud crabs with the shell missing, or claws without the rest of the crab, cannot be possessed.

A possession limit is not a daily limit. It includes fish and crabs held at home, including in a freezer. Closed waters also apply, so identify and measure your catch carefully and release undersized, no-take or closed-water catch immediately.

Use the Qld Fishing 2.0 app and check the current rules and closures before every trip.

Read the tide, not just the clock.

A pot can sit differently as the tide changes. Water movement may increase, ease off or change direction, affecting crab movement and where your pot settles.

Before you drop, look at the whole picture:
• Tide stage and changing current
• Water depth
• Bottom type
• Bait security
• Local conditions, including wind, rain and runoff

The same spot can fish differently from one tide to the next. Watch the water, check how your line is lying and take note of what changes between the run in and the run out. A good setup starts with understanding the water: not just choosing a time on the clock.

Good crabbing starts before the gear hits the water.

In Queensland tidal waters, take a few minutes to check your setup:

• Make sure pots or dillies are heavy enough to hold position in strong tidal currents, with enough rope between the gear and float. Lost gear can injure wildlife and become litter.

• Set gear in water deep enough throughout all stages of the tide. Trapped animals should not be left exposed to the sun, and unwanted or protected crabs need to be released alive.

• Check pots regularly: ideally, do not leave gear unattended. Sort each pot before moving on, releasing bycatch and no-take crabs carefully. Hooking crabs is illegal.

A practical pre-set and check routine:
1. Check the current Queensland rules, limits and closures.
2. Inspect the rope, float, weight and gear location.
3. Confirm the depth will remain suitable as the tide changes.
4. Check, sort and release pot-by-pot.
5. Remove all gear when finished and report derelict, abandoned or lost crab pots.

Female Queensland mud crabs are protected and must be returned to the water immediately.

Sometimes keeping a promise means doing the extra kilometres yourself.

Jeff Hayes had promised a customer their crab pots would be delivered on time, but suitable freight couldn’t be secured. Rather than blame someone else or let the customer down, Jeff got up before dawn, loaded the trailer and made the delivery himself.

That’s the level of personal commitment behind Hayes Pots and Products. When Jeff gives a customer his word, he takes that commitment seriously.

It’s not always the easiest option, but getting the gear where it needs to be, when it’s needed, matters.
