Celebrating Sri Lanka’s Cinematic Heritage Through the Restored Classic Gehenu Lamai (The Girls)

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in London was pleased to partner with The Garden Cinema in London and guest curator Ms. Anupma Shanker to present the newly restored Gehenu Lamai (The Girls) as part of the cinema's South Asian Heritage Month programme.
The screening, held on 27 July 2026, celebrated the enduring legacy of the late Ms. Sumitra Peries, Sri Lanka's first female film director and one of the country's most acclaimed filmmakers. Her landmark debut feature, Gehenu Lamai, remains a milestone in Sri Lankan cinema and continues to resonate with audiences through its sensitive portrayal of youth, love, social expectations, and resilience. The restoration of this cinematic classic has introduced a new generation of international audiences to one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated films.
A pre-recorded introduction by Ms. Anupma Shanker provided valuable insights into the significance of the restoration, the film's artistic and historical importance, and Ms. Peries' pioneering contribution to South Asian cinema. The event formed part of The Garden Cinema's South Asian Heritage Month programme, which celebrates the rich and diverse cinematic traditions of the region.
The High Commission was honoured to attend the screening and sponsor the pre-screening reception, which brought together film enthusiasts, representatives of the creative and cultural sectors, members of the Sri Lankan community, and friends of Sri Lankan cinema. The reception provided an opportunity to celebrate Sri Lanka's rich cinematic heritage while fostering greater appreciation of the country's artistic achievements among UK audiences.
Through partnerships with leading cultural institutions in the United Kingdom, the High Commission remains committed to promoting Sri Lanka's cultural heritage. Showcasing internationally recognised works such as Gehenu Lamai strengthens cultural exchange, deepens people-to-people ties, and raises awareness of Sri Lanka's significant contribution to world cinema.
