5 RIFLES D Company have been training on Brecon ready for their future deployment.

Conducting and practicing light infantry drills as well as learning and reinforcing skills without the support of the Warrior Armoured Vehicle saw them working in thick woodlands rolling countryside and urban environments.

Riflemen from 2nd Battalion The Rifles have been awarded Operational Service Medals for their deployment on Operation SHADER 21 at Hillsborough Castle.

The tour saw them conduct es**rt patrols across Northern Iraq to base defence duties, during what became one of the most intense periods faced by British forces in the region in recent years. Individuals received Wider Service and General Service Medals for other deployments such as Operation CABRIT to Estonia.

In total around 150 soldiers from B and C Company, both based in Lisburn, received their medals after completing tours between August 2025 and March 2026. Operating primarily as the UK Mobility Company, they provided armed protection to multinational advisers working with local security forces.

The Rifles take on The Parachute Regiment tonight at the Army Boxing Championship Finals in Aldershot, they are Swift and Bold and we wish them well in the ring.

The Rifles would like to take this opportunity to formally announce the appointment of our new Colonel Commandant, Lieutenant General Sir Charles Collins KBE DSO.

Commissioning into The Royal Green Jackets in 1995, he initially served with them in armoured and light infantry roles. His early service was spent in Northern Ireland, Germany, and the United Kingdom with deployments to the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

He commanded 5 RIFLES in Germany, followed by 7th Infantry Brigade (The Desert Rats), and 1 (UK) Division and most recently he led the Standing Joint Headquarters.

Additionally, General Charlie was the Military Assistant to the Commander of NATO’s Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, Chief of Staff of 1 (UK) Division, Assistant Chief of Staff Plans at the Permanent Joint Headquarters, as well as the Assistant Chief of the General Staff.

General Charlie is currently the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Military Strategy and Operations).

The Rifles would also like to thank the outgoing Colonel Commandant, Lieutenant General Sir Tom Copinger-Symes KCB CBE and wishes him all the very best for the future.
