19/11/1997 – a day forever in our hearts 🤍

HM Coastguard Winchman Billy Deacon tragically gave his own life while saving others in the Shetland Islands.

Despite the most severe and demanding conditions, on the day in question, Billy was winched down to the deck of the Green Lily – a cargo vessel that had gotten into difficulty in mountainous seas.

Billy helped winch crew members to safety, but sadly, last on the deck and alone, he didn’t make it back.

We will always remember his courage, sacrifice, and meritorious service. Billy Deacon – the very definition of a true hero.

Are you interested in applying to become a volunteer CRO (Coastguard Rescue Officer) with Portland Bill CRT?

We are looking for new team members who can provide regular availability through the day, evening and weekends to join the team. Do you live on, or work around the Portland area? You will be part of a committed team of volunteers, providing 24/7 pager response at a moments notice. This could be to rescue someone from a cliff or in the water, searching for missing people and assisting other emergency services in difficult situations and conditions.

We are holding station open days on-
Wed, 29th October 1800-2100hrs
Sat, 1st November 1100-1300hrs

Come along and meet the team, have a chat about the equipment we use and the training we undertake. We are located near to Combens Electricial, Easton Lane Portland DT5 1BW
