Did you know the original Hillingdon House was built in 1717 as a hunting lodge for the 3rd Duke of Schomberg?

This building was damaged by a fire and was rebuilt in 1844 to how it is seen today.

Hillingdon House and its surrounding land was purchased by the British Government in 1915 and was used as a convalescent home for Canadian soldiers returning from the Western Front in the First World War. This photo shows Hillingdon House during its time as a convalescent hospital, alongside barracks which would have been used by the soldiers staying there.

The Royal Flying Corps purchased the site in November 1917, and in 1926 the site was chosen as the headquarters for the Air Defence of Great Britain. It remained in this role until the reorganisation of the Royal Air Force in 1936, when Bentley Priory was chosen to become the headquarters of the newly formed Fighter Command. Hillingdon House was chosen to become the headquarters of No. 11 Group Fighter Command, responsible for defending the south-east of England.

Did you know the 1908 Olympic Marathon - one of the most dramatic races in sporting history - passed right through the heart of Hillingdon?

At a time when the marathon was considered the Olympic Games' ultimate test of bravery and endurance, huge crowds gathered along the route. The New York Times described it as "a spectacle the like of which none living had ever seen", while local reports noted that "every available spot along the route was taken advantage of and a continuous line of onlookers was formed".

For the first nine miles, British runners dominated the field and coalminer Tom Lord briefly led the race through the Uxbridge area before being overtaken as the international challengers came through. Ruislip was the halfway point of the marathon, where the Middlesex Advertiser reported that "the village was absolutely besieged" by spectators eager to witness Olympic history.

Eastcote also enjoyed a historic moment, with local accounts claiming that "the first ever bus to come to Eastcote brought people to see the marathon".

The marathon ended in unforgettable fashion when Italian runner Dorando Pietri staggered into White City Stadium and collapsed repeatedly within sight of victory. After receiving assistance, he was disqualified, handing the gold medal to American Johnny Hayes. Pietri's courage won hearts around the world, and he was later presented with a special cup by Princess Alexandra.
