Interested in learning modern foreign languages? After a course in Spanish Breakthrough, one of our learners shares his experience of how he put into practice what he learned.

“Having being visiting Spain for a number of years, the crunch time arrived last Autumn whether to consider part-living there. The answer was 'Yes' and so preparations began in earnest in January 2020! Not having a word of Spanish, apart from 'Gracias', 'Cerveza' and 'Buenos Dias' I decided I'd better start learning the language properly. LB Hillingdon's Adult Education 'Breakthrough Spanish' course came to the rescue! From end-Jan to July we had 20 fabulous 2.5hr weekly classes and this allowed me to recently visit Spain again and to interact successfully and efficiently with the local people. I was able to order food and drinks, purchase furniture, ask for directions, negotiate with the bank, make friends at the local Tapas Bar and get to know my new neighbours in their own tongue. This would not have been possible at the start of 2020 and attending Hillingdon's 'Breakthrough' course has been a great investment! I am now due to visit Spain again in September and will also enrol on the next Spanish course, the 'Preliminary' at Hillingdon. I would recommend the 'Breakthrough' to any beginner wanting to learn quickly!”

One of our Art learners, Lise, participated in a project to paint portraits of NHS key workers and post it to them as a special thanks for all their hard work and efforts.
She says, ”This was an incredible experience - so rewarding for me which is why I chose to do a further two paintings.”

All the paintings are now in the process of being added onto an online gallery for the public to view.

Good News Story of the Week
Here’s feedback from one of our learners, Sanowar, studying English for Work, on her experience of online learning when the course switched over from classroom based to online learning due to the pandemic
“Personally speaking, my IT skills have further improved from good to excellent and I gained more knowledge about new, different things. As far as I am concerned, adjusting with the device, learning how to overcome obstacles calmly and managing things during the lesson was quite challenging. However, my children as well as my teacher's detailed explanations and guidance helped me a lot throughout the classes. I do believe that nothing is impossible in the world. If we work hard and try our best, we can overcome any difficulty.“

Good News Story of the Week
Our learners have been sharing their isolation stories with us during the corona virus pandemic. A few weeks ago, one of our ESOL learners, Elsy, had to leave for Lebanon. As her course was adapted for online learning during lockdown, she was able to carry on with her course remotely. This is what she has to say:

“Even though I’m in Lebanon , I was so happy to share your online courses. I have learnt so many things from studying, viewing the videos and then do the homework, it’s very good experience.”

We'd love to hear your good news stories and share them through our page. If you have a story to share, please click on the link below to write it and for us to get in touch with you.

Our tutor Susanne is with Hillingdon in Bloom with tips on how to make a frame to grow runner beans.

Watch the latest video in our Hillingdon in Bloom series - to learn how to make a frame to grow runner beans:

⛏ Prepare the ground by clearing the area of any weeds and stones, then rake over to make the area level.

🌿 Push 2 rows of bamboo canes at regular intervals firmly into the soil and join at the top with one long pole - tie each pair of poles to this.

🌱 Plant a runner bean plant at the base of each pole and firm the soil around the plant. Tie the plant in loosely to guide it up the pole.

💦 Water regularly. The runner beans should be ready to pick in 12 to 16 weeks - just in time for our Autumn Show in September!

Good News Story of the Week
Our tutors, learners and volunteers have done amazing work helping out sewing scrubs for Healthcare teams in Hillingdon.

Sue Williams (one of our tutors) is a member of the Ickenham Sewing group who joined ‘For The Love of Scrubs - Hillingdon Work Group’, and started to make scrub uniforms, laundry bags, hats and masks for Hillingdon hospitals, hospices, care homes, GP surgeries and health centres. Soon, other HACL staff joined this noble cause - Carina and Carole as well as current and previous learners - Katherine, Rosanne, Tajinder, Marie and one of our volunteers, Patricia.
A local textile company in Ruislip ‘Threads London Limited’, run by Sital Punja, took over the management of FTLOS – HWG and scaled up production and volunteer engagement to increase impact. ‘Threads’ premises and services were used as a hub to cut garments in bulk and distribute to local sewers to construct items as well as producing them onsite for our local NHS workers. Carole's partner volunteered as a driver, collecting cut out scrubs from ‘Threads’ premises to deliver locally and picking up finished uniforms.

A huge thank you to the sewing team for all the incredible work, care and support for our frontline health workers.

Good News Story of the Week
Our learners have been sharing their isolation stories with us during the corona virus pandemic.
Chris, a learner on foundation IT course says, “I started this course as I felt that I wasn't up on my computer skills apart from checking social media and emails. I felt nervous starting and was really enjoying it and then this all happened. I thought I wouldn't continue as I wouldn't have the time as I have a new baby but Sue, our tutor, has been brilliant and patient with me. She has been giving us work to do in our own time but has also explained, as she would in a class situation, how to do it too. I have found this so helpful and I feel that my questions have been answered before I can even ask them. Sue also holds Google chats fortnightly to ensure we are ok. This is nice as I find it easier to talk face to face. Going forward I have learned so much and still am. Sue has enabled me to work from home and at my own pace. I am sitting here now with my 5 month old Cian on my lap and still learning. Everyone is a winner.”

Good News Story of the Week

Our learners have been sharing their isolation stories with us during the corona virus pandemic.
This is what Najwa, an English learner has to say on her online learning, “First it was a bit difficult, but now it is ok and even on one hand it is good to access online learning, because apart from that I have to type, upload documents, write email and much more which improves my English in the same time. In this situation it is the best way in my point of view.”
