๐ŸŒŠ *Seychelles and Marshall Islands Strengthen Blue Economy Cooperation* ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ญ

The Department of Blue Economy, within the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy, recently hosted a high-level delegation from the Republic of the Marshall Islands* for a four-day study visit focused on strengthening cooperation in sustainable fisheries, Blue Economy governance and ocean-based economic development.

Led by Hon. Anthony Muller, Minister for Natural Resources and Commerce, the delegation engaged with key Seychelles institutions, including the Seychelles Ports Authority, Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Trade and Investment, Department of Fisheries, Department of Blue Economy and Seychelles Fisheries Authority.

Discussions and technical visits to Indian Ocean Tuna Ltd. (IOT) and the Central Common Cold Store (CCCS) explored fisheries governance, blue finance, tuna processing and value addition, public-private partnerships, and cold-chain infrastructure.

As fellow Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Seychelles and the Marshall Islands reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening technical cooperation, knowledge exchange and partnerships for resilient Blue Economies and sustainable livelihoods.

The Department of Blue Economy thanks all participating Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Private Sector Partners for their valuable contribution to the success of the study visit.

The Department of Blue Economy in collaboration with its partners convened a workshop on BBNJ and its relevance to the JMA on 30th July.

The workshop brought together representatives from seychelles and mauritius to strenghten understanding of the bbnj agreeement, explore its potential to complement the existing JMA framework and identify opportunities for enhanced cooeperation in ocean governance.

In her opening remarks, the Principal Secretary for the Blue Economy, Ms. Veronique Nibourette underscored the importance of regional cooperation and collective action in addressing the growing challenges facing our oceans.

She also highlighted that the BBNJ Joint Management Area Workshop provides a valuable platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration, reaffirming Seychelles' commitment to strengthening ocean governance and ensuring the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction for the benefit of present and future generations.

During the workshop dicussions focused on key areas of the agreement including marine genetic resources, area based management tools, environment impact assesments, capacity building, while also considering priorities for bbnj cop1.

The Joint Management Area (JMA) has reached another important milestone today (29th July 2026) in strengthening the cooperative management of the shared maritime area.

Following the extensive technical work undertaken by the Technical Committee (TC), the Joint Commission (JC) co- Chaired by Mr. Alain de Comarmond, Secretary of State for Fisheries and Blue Economy (Seychelles) and Mr. S.C. Sebaluck, Secretary to the Cabinet (Mauritius) officially signed and approved the Minutes of Meeting, endorsing the recommendations developed through the collaborative efforts of the technical experts.

This milestone reflects the strong commitment of both Parties to transparent governance, informed decision-making, and the sustainable management of shared marine resources.

The approved recommendations will guide the next phase of cooperation and implementation under the Joint Management Area framework.

We congratulate all members of the Technical Committee and the Joint Commission for their dedication and continued collaboration in advancing the sustainable blue economy and responsible ocean governance.

On the morning of 29th July, a major step forward was marked in shared ocean governance as our Principal Secretary for Blue Economy, Ms. Veronique Nibourette (Seychelles), and Dr. Mohammed Rezah Badal (Mauritius) successfully signed the official TC minutes during the Joint Management Area (JMA) Technical Committee meeting.

This vital partnership on the Mascarene Plateau continues to drive sustainable marine spatial planning, resource management, and regional cooperation between our two island nations.
