North Northamptonshire Council working in partnership with Kier Highways are writing to advise you of the upcoming works on the A6 at Irthlingborough viaduct next month to re-waterproof deck 6 and deck 7, which will require a full weekend road closure.

To minimise disruption, the works have been scheduled over the weekend in two phases:
Phase 1 will commence Friday 8 May:

Full Closure from Friday 8 May 2026, 8pm – Monday 11 May 2026, 6am

Overnight Closure Monday 11 May 2026, 8pm – Tuesday 12 May 2026, 6am

Phase 2 will commence on Friday 29 May:
Full closure from Friday 29th May 2026, 8pm – Monday 1st June 2026, 6am

Full closure over night Monday 1st June 2026 8pm – 6am

This work is the start of phased re-waterproofing and expansion joint replacement of the reinforced concrete viaduct.
The viaduct was constructed in 1936 and is in relatively good condition but needs major works to preserve its integrity and ensure it is fully functional for many years to come.
Whilst work will be required for all 9 decks over the coming years, deck 6 and deck 7 is the priority as it has had repeated occurrences of damaging potholes developing. The scheme has been funded by the Local Transport Grant, received from the Department for Transport.
During the closure, we will remove the existing surfacing and waterproofing from the bridge deck, carry out concrete repairs where required, and apply a new spray‑applied waterproofing system. This process is weather‑dependent and must take place in dry conditions, followed by integrity testing before the carriageway surface and road markings can be reinstated.
Signed diversion routes (please see attached document) will be in place during closures and motorists are advised to follow local diversion signage, plan journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel. Further information on the diversion route is available on Causeway one.network
A contingency weekend has been identified for each phase should the works be affected by adverse weather:
Phase 1 contingency:
Full Closure Friday 15 May 2026, 8pm – Monday 18 May 2026, 6am
Overnight Closure Monday 18 May 2026, 8pm – Tuesday 19 May 2026, 6am
Phase 2 contingency:
Full closure from Friday 5th June 2026, 8pm – Monday 8th June 2026, 6am
Full closure overnight Monday 08/06/2026 8pm -6am
Any changes to works will be published on the North Northants Highways page.

Hi everyone, now that the weather is improving we would like to put some lovely bright new plants in the flower beds on the Memorial Green.

The memorial walls in particular look lovely with a little bit of colour, however, we are noticing an increase in people leaving potted tributes for their loved ones in the soil on top of the walls.

The cut flowers in the pots die off and unfortunately all that is left is the pot which takes up room in the small flower beds.

If you have left a pot recently in memory of a loved one please could you remove it for us so that we can plant up the tops of the walls.

We will be planting up in two weeks time so unfortunately all remaining pots will be removed at that time.

Many thanks for your understanding. Mawsley Parish Council
