We were privileged to have Tasha Dawson, a lay member of the Cancer Alliance, at our inaugural conference – Shaping the future of cancer care across West Yorkshire and Harrogate.

Tasha is also the founder and programme manager of the Ella Dawson Foundation, established as a legacy to her sister Ella and the life she lived well. The Foundation continues the work she started in helping other young adults with a cancer diagnosis.

Tasha spoke about her work with the Cancer Alliance and how the conference provided a great opportunity to have everyone in the same room, talking about the same goal.

If you or a loved one has received a cancer diagnosis you are invited to a day filled with information and support in Leeds.

The free cancer summer roadshow takes places at the Welcome In community centre café, OPAL, at 55 Bedford Drive, LS16 6DJ on Monday, 22 June 10am-2pm.

People can learn about a range of services including Leeds Macmillan Information and Support Centre; Maggie’s cancer charity; Yorkshire Cancer Community and Yorkshire Cancer Research’s Active Together initiative.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be available.

We were very fortunate to have award-winning TV presenter, journalist and podcaster Christine Talbot chair our inaugural conference in Leeds recently.

The conference shone a light on Shaping the future of cancer care across West Yorkshire and Harrogate and featured fantastic speeches, inspiring stories and lively debate, all culminating in a very special awards ceremony.

Christine said it was wonderful to see all the resources that are being put into cancer care and treatment in our region as she shared her own cancer journey.

How Cancer Alliances can maximise their role in delivering the National Cancer Plan was the topic of a presentation delivered by our managing director Jason Pawluk at a fringe event at the UK Oncology Forum today.

The forum, held in Harrogate, provides opportunities to network with colleagues and peers and learn more about the advances in oncology treatment and management perspectives.

Jason discussed the importance of coming together to collaborate, how Cancer Alliances are perfectly placed to be system convenors for cancer, the importance of bringing the primary care voice to the table, the importance of putting the patient first and digital first.

He also discussed personalised care, the importance of using appropriate data to drive continuous improvement, being bold in what we need from our partners, diversifying income and much more.

Great to see Lucy Elkiss announced as Regional Leadership Champion at last night's NHS Excellence Awards. Our colleague Rachel Moser nominated Lucy as a truly inspirational leader who has had an enormous impact on the Aspirant Cancer Career Education and Development Programme (ACCEND) through her clear vision, creativity and approach.
Lucy embodies not only the values of the NHS, but our specific WYH Cancer Alliance values - be courageous; be honest; be kind. Said Rachel: "It's not just what Lucy has done, but how she's gone about it - with generosity, compassion and integrity."
