From screening to diagnosis, treatment to support, local and regional teams are transforming cancer outcomes for patients in the North East and Yorkshire.

Our Living With and Beyond Cancer Team is proud to promote its next Connecting Roles Community of Practice event.

Following on from the success of its previous Community of Practice on Physical Activity, this next session is titled Financial Support & Reablement – Supporting People with a Cancer Diagnosis.

This session is aimed at the non-clinical workforce across our region, exploring how we can better support people following a cancer diagnosis.

The team will share information on national and local financial support, and explore how people can be helped to maintain independence, build confidence and, where appropriate, remain in or return to work. 💼
🎤 We’ll also be joined by guest speakers, including the Macmillan Cancer Support Money & Work team, sharing their expertise and practical advice.

Collaboration at its best - helping to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, catching it early and the importance of screening.

🏥 A privilege to welcome stakeholders from across the Wakefield Health Community to the DIY Kitchens Stadium this morning to discuss the Foundation's 'Tackling Cancer' project!

❤️🤍💙 Delivered in partnership with the NHS West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance, the project seeks to raise awareness of various forms of cancer, including useful information about signs and symptoms, screening and the importance of early detection!

It was great to meet one of our local representatives Jade Botterill MP relating to constituency issues.

We also talked about the opportunities to improve cancer care and outcomes locally.

Cancer is a cruel disease which robs people of so much. That's why I met with the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance to discuss how we can work together to:

📈 Increase diagnosis
🏥 Improve care
❤️‍🩹 Save lives

Know the signs – act early!

Great to see how plans for our community cancer bus are progressing.

Our Managing Director, Jason Pawluk; Programme Manager for Health Inequalities and Early Diagnosis, Hayley Snowden, Innovations Project Manager Vicky Radcliffe and Clinical Director Dr Helena Rolfe recently visited charity Hope for Tomorrow to see first-hand how things could shape up with the new vehicle when it hits the road.

If all goes to plan, the bus will be the first of its kind in the country to be travelling out and about raising awareness in local communities, with the opportunity for people to discuss their signs/symptoms and access care in a friendly and accessible setting, close to where they live.

The deadline is looming for entries into our annual innovation funding competition.

Funding is available for innovative projects that promote early cancer diagnosis and better care.

This year the scheme will align to the National Cancer Plan and West Yorkshire and Harrogate population priorities, with a focus on innovation projects that support, for example, digital transformation, improving experience of cancer care to address health inequalities in black and minority ethnic communities, LGBTQIA+ communities, people affected by serious mental illness and learning difficulties, as well as improving psychosocial support for parents and families with a young person diagnosed with cancer.

It is open to Trust, Place and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations.

Last year’s recipients included Leeds Children’s Hospital, with funding used to pay for home chemotherapy packs for children receiving treatment, as an alternative to being admitted to a ward for chemotherapy.

Innovation funding also enabled the delivery of cutting-edge technological initiatives to improve radiotherapy for patients with brain and liver cancer in Leeds.

Applications close on Monday, 10 August.
