Exciting news!
Thanks to support from Arts Council England the V&A Purchase Grant Fund and Artfund, we’ve expanded our Museum’s outstanding and important collections with an original oil painting by the legendary Sheffield artist, Joe Scarborough.
The painting celebrates the incredible journey of the iconic Grimethorpe Colliery Band who achieved worldwide fame after appearing in the film, Brassed Off, which also happens to be one of the artist’s favourite films.
The artwork shows the band playing at the Royal Albert Hall and is a homage to the iconic film. The piece also depicts some key aspects of the band’s history and achievements such as playing at St Georges Hall in Bradford where they have won the annual Yorkshire Area Championships many times. In the background the Sydney Opera House, Mount Fuji and the Statue of Liberty can be seen, representing the successful international tours of the band. All of this is brought together in the artist’s unmistakable style.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the film Brassed Off, the painting will be on display in our galleries from Saturday 23 May, alongside a jacket worn by a member of Grimethorpe Colliery Band in the film.
It also coincides with our annual event Bold as Brass which celebrates brass band music and the important links to coal mining.
