I’ve previously shared a few photos showing the progress being made in creating our new Reflection Garden and dedicated Scattering of Ashes area in Gods Acre.

I’m pleased to share the latest pictures with you today. The Scattering of Ashes area has now been fully prepared and planted, with the grass seed down.

We are now just waiting for the grass to grow and establish before the area can be brought into use. It’s wonderful to see how this special space is coming together, and we look forward to it providing a peaceful place for reflection and remembrance for many years to come.

A special thank you to local contractor Tim Lee for all his hard work and dedication with this project.

Thank you also to everyone for your continued support and patience while this important work is completed.

Inspiration Arrives at Swanage Railway – 16th–18th February 2026

This February, Swanage Railway proudly hosts “Inspiration” as part of the national Railway 200 celebrations.

In September 2025, Railway 200 marked the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway on 27 September 1825, widely recognised as the birth of the modern railway. Two centuries on, communities across the country are celebrating the remarkable legacy and future of Britain’s railways.

Here in Dorset, Swanage Railway stands as a shining example of that legacy in action. Looking at the thriving heritage line today, you would never believe it has been rebuilt almost entirely by volunteers since 1976, after nearly seven miles of track were demolished in 1972. Now proudly celebrating its 50th anniversary, the railway represents dedication, resilience and community spirit.

The accompanying photograph captures the Railway 200 “Inspiration” with Corfe Castle Parish Council Chairman Stephen Dru Drury, Swanage Railway’s first Chief Executive Abbie King, and Swanage Railway Company Chairman Ben Ford.

A New Space Taking Shape at God’s Acre

The first photo shows an area of our cemetery that, until recently, was an unused open space with just one solitary tree.

The second photo shows how that same area is now being transformed into a Scattering of Ashes Area and Reflection Garden. Work is currently underway, carried out by a local landscaper, to create a peaceful and thoughtful space for quiet reflection and remembrance.

In the coming weeks, seating stones will be added, providing a place to sit and reflect. These stones will also allow the Parish Council to place memorial plaques for those whose ashes have been scattered within God’s Acre. The stones themselves have been supplied by a local quarry, further supporting local businesses.

We look forward to sharing more updates as this meaningful project progresses.

Our collection days will return to normal from Monday 12 January.

Festive collections Remember:

* We will collect up to two extra sacks of rubbish beside your bin on your first rubbish collection after Christmas Day
* No garden waste collections will take place from Christmas Day until Thursday 8 January
* Household recycling centres are open from 9am to 4pm daily, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
* Extra recycling, including glass and food, will be collected on your recycling collection day, provided it has been separated correctly and placed in a suitable sturdy container (no bags) that can be easily lifted by one person. Please help our crews by putting your glass out for collection before Christmas. This ensures you have as much space as possible in your glass box, helping prevent over spilling containers, and reduces the amount of extra glass we collect over the busy festive period

Festive recycling
Many households produce extra waste over Christmas, but much of it can be recycled using your kerbside Recycle for Dorset service. Remember that you can recycle:

Cooked and uncooked food, using your food waste bin
wrapping paper, Christmas cards (no glitter paper)
plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
glass bottles and jars (please keep glass separate)
cardboard and recyclable packaging (not polystyrene)
carton and foil
See what items can be recycled.

Christmas trees
Dorset Council does not collect Christmas trees of any kind with rubbish or recycling at the kerbside.

You can recycle your real Christmas tree by:

* Home composting it
* Cutting it up and placing it in your garden waste bin
* Taking it to a household recycling centre
* Booking a Christmas tree collection with a Dorset-based charity or service

Community Warning – Cold Callers in the Area

Just a quick heads-up that there have been cold callers going door-to-door offering home improvement services in our neighbourhood today.

Please remember:
• You are under no obligation to speak to them or let them into your home.
• Legitimate companies won’t pressure you on the doorstep.
• Always keep your door locked while you check who’s calling.
* Take a phone with you, or have one close by.

If anything feels off, or if you feel threatened, intimidated, or unsafe, call the police immediately on 999. Trust your instincts and stay safe.

Feel free to share this to spread the word. Stay vigilant, everyone!
