Tiger 131

Tiger 131 A page dedicated to the world’s only running Tiger I tank, Tiger 131 located in Bovington, Dorset. The crew bailed out and the tank was captured.

Tiger 131

On 21 April 1943, a Tiger I of the 504th German heavy tank battalion, with turret number 131, was captured on a hill called Djebel Djaffa in Tunisia. A round from a Churchill tank of the British 48th Royal Tank Regiment hit the Tiger's gun barrel and ricocheted into its turret ring, jamming its traverse and wounding the commander. The tank was repaired and displayed in Tunisia before be

ing sent to England for a thorough inspection. On 25 September 1951, the captured tank was officially handed over to the Bovington Tank Museum by the British Ministry of Supply. In June 1990, the tank was removed from display at the museum and work began on its restoration. This was carried out both by the museum and the Army Base Repair Organisation and involved an almost complete disassembly of the tank. The Maybach HL230 engine from the museum's Tiger II was installed (it was originally fitted with a slightly smaller Maybach HL210, which had been sectioned apart for display), along with a modern fire-suppressant system in the engine compartment. In December 2003, Tiger 131 returned to the museum, restored and in running condition.

The Tiger II, also known as the King Tiger, is one of many German heavy tanks we have here at The Tank Museum. It was designed to be a bigger and better version of the infamous Tiger I.

In sub-zero temperatures, engines can seize up and oil can freeze. To avoid this, on the Eastern Front, tank crews would leave their engines running or start fires under their tanks. To learn more about Panzer IVs like those pictured, click here: https://youtu.be/HTRED_rmmUY

This is a running replica of a First World War German A7V. At almost 29ft (nearly 9m) long and over 10 feet (3m) tall and wide, it is an imposing presence. For the crew of 18 in the real thing, however, it was a cramped, smelly, 60°C box. Schnuck, the vehicle this represents, was captured in August 1918 then displayed at the Imperial War Museum until 1922, when it was scrapped. Only the gun has survived. The German Grille mounted a 15cm heavy infantry gun onto the hull of a Panzer 38(t). This created a powerful self-propelled gun from a tank that was quickly becoming outdated in 1943. Learn more about German self-propelled guns here: https://youtu.be/zlkaxAKRuI4

This 1/12th scale King Tiger Model is an outstanding piece of scratch built modelmaking. Powered by two electric motors, it allows each track to be driven left or right. A further motor drives the turret, and another drives the recoil on the gun’s barrel.
