Yay for kai and community at the end of a busy first day of Taranaki Careers Expo! - it's a regular ritual for all the exhibitors, many from outside the region.

Culinary treats covered several tables - yum sandwiches, savouries, cheese and fruit platters, divine carrot cake, choc cake, lamingtons and more!

Catering stars Wayne Benton (Expo trustee) and Jill De Luca joined forces with high school trainee chefs Lilly, Ella, Payton and Korben to rustle up an incredible tasty, colourful and abundant feast, enjoyed by all.

"We are very proud of the manaakitanga offered at Taranaki Careers Expo", says Warwick Foy, chair of the Expo Trust.

Study and training can open doors but navigating funding and financial support isn’t always easy. Easing the burden is StudyLink Outreach Officer, Phillippa, who helps people turn plans into reality.
Working across Taranaki, King Country and Whanganui she’s the smiley face with ready answers for students, families and educators.
A mother of three, she has firsthand experience of supporting young people to fill in forms which can be bewildering for teens and adults starting out on tertiary study.
“I saw this role as an opportunity to help other students with their application process. The questions can be tricky and there’s supporting documentation to get organised. People are confused by the difference between student loan and allowance… and it’s important they understand that a student loan is a contract they are committing to.”

Apply early and set up a RealMe verified account now because it will help with the application process later on, recommends Phillippa.

Since starting the role in January 2026, she’s visited dozens of secondary schools, attended university information evenings and school expos - she never tires of talking to people.

Phillippa will be at the Taranaki Careers and Training Expo on 17 and 18 August at the TSB Arena in New Plymouth.
