The nurdle spill along our coast has exposed a glaring gap in our nations laws around plastic pollution.

The EU recently formalised its Plastic Pellet Loss Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2025/2365), which mandates risk management plans and independent audits for large handlers. We want the UK to follow suit with its own equivalent law.

We can still make a difference to our wonderful coast!

It’s been amazing to see the community come together to tackle the nurdle clean up along our coast, thanks to the efforts of Sally McGee at Yonder and Cllr Tom Bailey.

So many of you have been out along our shores around the clock to help clean up the nurdle spill. Around 1000 volunteers have taken part in the clean up operation and each of you should be so proud of your contribution!
It is of vital importance that we make sure that nothing like this can ever happen again. We’re calling on the government to develop a zero tolerance policy on plastic pollution. Add your name to help get the message to Westminster! https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/759563

An accident at Port of Tynes has meant millions of plastic nurdles washed up in Whitley Bay.
These plastic pellets can be dangerous to wildlife - if you’re walking your dog along our coastline, please make sure to keep them from ingesting any pellets.

The proposed closure of High Borrans has taken everyone by surprise.

The Outdoor Centre, which has been a much loved feature of childhood for many North Tyneside children for over 60 years, is to be closed.

I am really disappointed by the council’s decision and also by the lack of transparency around this decision. Please sign the petition and contact your ward councillors if you are concerned. We need to preserve precious resources like High Borrans for the future of the young people of North Tyneside.

Whitley Bay Big Clean Team are an inspirational group who give their time and energy to keeping WB clean and developing a real sense of community. A huge thanks to Helen and Richard and the rest of the group who welcomed me along with several other new volunteers this morning. We were joined by Mohammed from the Kurdish Community in Wallsend who loves to litter pick and was delighted to find this group too.
