Research has shown that leaving your lawn to grow and encouraging wildflowers can create enough nectar for ten times the amount of pollinators.
Lawns are often monocultures (one species) and are deserts for insects. The neat green lawn became popular with the aristocracy centuries ago as it showed wealth as it took a lot of staff to maintain. Due to this we have been told that ‘weeds’ like dandelions and daisies are ‘bad’, but they are actually wildflowers! Dandelions contribute 9% of a lawn’s pollen and 37% of its nectar.
In the last 70 years we have lost 97% of our wildflower meadows, and pollinator numbers have declined by 50% in just under 50 years.
Leaving your lawn and allowing wildflowers to grow encourages insects to return to your garden, which has an knock on impact with other wildlife like birds, squirrels, hedgehogs, foxes, and badgers. 🦡🐿🦔🦉🦊🦆
