Last week the annual RI**ES Bugle Concentration took place at Worthy Down. There was an exceptional display of discipline, skill, whilst keeping our Regimental traditions as strong as ever.

Brigadier Cates represented the Colonel Commandant alongside a distinguished judging panel that included the Director of Music, the RI**ES Captain, and the Senior Bugle Major. After much deliberation the prestigious bugle appointments are:

HRH The Colonel-in-Chief's Bugler: Rfn Rumble (5 RI**ES)

The Colonel Commandant's Bugler: Rfn O'Neil (2 RI**ES)

The Divisional Colonel's Bugler: Rfn Green (1 RI**ES)

The Perryman Award: Rfn Abibo (2 RI**ES)

The Divisional Colonel's Cup (Best Platoon Display) was awarded to 2 RI**ES, led to victory by the newly appointed RI**ES Bugle Major CSjt Brown.

Drones are changing warfare 🪖

Soldiers from 1st Battalion The Ri**es have tested a new layered approach to countering drone threats.

The exercise marked the first time the full counter-drone capability has been tested as a single package, helping soldiers develop the skills needed to identify, track and defeat unmanned aerial threats on the modern battlefield.

A key part of an infanteer’s initial and ongoing training is Live Firing Tactical Training (LFTT).

From individual drills through to Company level attacks, soldiers are tested in realistic conditions, developing the skills, confidence and teamwork needed to operate effectively as part of a fighting force.

Recently, RI**ES Officers travelled to Tallinn to represent the regiment and the Infantry in the Ironman Estonia triathlon. The race consisted of a 3.8km open water swim in Lake Raku, a 180km cycle around through rolling rural farmland followed by a 41km city-based coastal run, teeming with local support. The race day was the validation of 12 months of dedicated training and sacrifice and represented a significant lifetime goal for each individual.

Despite the unexpected and challenging stormy conditions on the day, all of the Riflemen were able to call upon their Infanteer’s grit as they completed the course ahead of the cut off (4 first timers) and were rewarded with the famous phrase; “you are an Ironman!” as they crossed the finish line.

The team aim to use this recent success in energising the sport of triathlon across The Ri**es as they each continue to represent the Regiment, the Infantry and the Army at upcoming Army Triathlon Association (ATA) events in September 2026 and into 2027.
