A huge thank you to residents across Adur and Worthing who have supported our teams during this week’s heatwave. ☀🫶

Many of our waste and recycling crews have been met on their rounds with cold drinks, ice creams and ice pops, while others have received kind words of encouragement from residents. These thoughtful gestures have made a real difference.

We’d also like to recognise our many other teams who have continued working hard in the heat to support our communities.

Our parks team has been maintaining green spaces, improving playgrounds and watering plants and trees to help them thrive. Thanks also to our community of green-fingered volunteers who work alongside the team to make these spaces even better for everyone.

Worthing Coastal Office has continued patrolling our busy coastline, helping residents and visitors enjoy the beach and promenade safely.

Our outreach team has been working alongside Turning Tides’ St Clare’s Community Hub to provide extra support to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, delivering water, carrying out welfare checks and helping people access local services.

Our housing teams have been assisting residents, carrying out repairs and investigating domestic issues reported across our communities.

Our Community Alarm service has been visiting vulnerable customers, checking equipment is working correctly and making sure residents are keeping safe and well during the hot weather.

These are just a few examples of the many teams continuing to deliver essential services and improvements across Adur and Worthing, despite the high temperatures.

To everyone who has offered a cold drink, a friendly smile or a few words of support this week – thank you. Your kindness has been greatly appreciated.

Sussex Police has warned Adur and Worthing residents about scammers posing as council workers and claiming there is an issue with drainage or sewage in the area.

They ask for an initial £10-£50 deposit to secure the services of a drainage company, then ask for the victims’ card and PIN so they can authorise the payment in their van.

They then make off with the bank card and max them out at local cash machines.

We never ask for payment on the doorstep and will never ask for a PIN number.

If you have any information on this scam you can report it to Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting crime reference 47260144219.

The public are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Huge thanks to everyone who ensured their bins were ready for collection by 5.30am this morning, helping us protect our crews during today's particularly hot weather.

We can confirm that tomorrow's (Thursday's) collections will also start a little earlier than normal to reduce the time our crews spend working in peak temperatures.

If your waste, recycling, or garden waste is due to be collected tomorrow, please ensure your bins are at the boundary of your property by 5.30am.

Thanks to everyone who left kind comments on our previous post. We know we're biased, but our crews do an amazing job, particularly during challenging weather conditions.

We're committed to doing what we can to make their physically demanding jobs safer during this week's heatwave.

We’re bringing forward residents’ bin collections this Wednesday to help protect our busy crews from the hottest part of the day during this week’s heatwave. ☀

Following the Met Office Red Extreme Heat Warning, our collection crews will begin their rounds from 5.30am on Wednesday, a little earlier than usual, so they can complete as much of their work as possible before temperatures peak.

If your recycling, refuse or garden waste is due to be collected on Wednesday, please make sure your bin is placed at the boundary of your property by 5.30am.

We are keeping Thursday’s collections under review. If any changes are required, we will let residents know here and through our services app as soon as possible.

You can easily check your collection day and find out how to download the app by visiting our website: https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/bin-day/

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we take steps to keep our crews safe during this period.

Due to high temperatures this week, we have activated the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to provide additional support to the most vulnerable members of our communities.

SWEP is activated when temperatures are forecast to exceed 30°C. It may also be triggered by other severe weather conditions that pose significant health risks.

We are committed to ensuring people have access to hydration and support, particularly during periods of hot weather, while continuing to work towards longer-term solutions.

Our outreach team and Turning Tides St Clare’s Community Hub are providing additional support, welfare checks, and assistance with accessing services during the hot weather.

We’ll be delivering bottles of water and carrying out welfare checks. In addition to its usual opening hours, St Clare’s in Marine Place, Worthing, will be open from 12.00pm to 1.30pm as a designated cool space.

We will also proactively contact people known to be sleeping rough. If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough in the district or borough, you can let us know via the StreetLink reporting tool: https://thestreetlink.org.uk/

Some tips for staying safe in this week's hot weather ☀️🌡️

🔴 A red heat-health alert is in place for the South East from 1am on Wednesday 24 June to 11pm on Thursday 25 June.

Very high temperatures are expected, including overnight. This level of heat can seriously affect people’s health, including those who are usually fit and well.
Older people, young children and people with health conditions may be more affected, so please take care and check on anyone who may need support.

You can help keep yourself and others safe by:

☀️ Staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day
💧 Drinking plenty of water
🏠 Keeping your home as cool as possible
👒 Taking water, sun cream and a hat if you need to go out
🚗 Checking before travelling and taking extra water with you
🌊 Taking extra care near the coast, rivers and open water
👥 Checking on friends, family and neighbours who may need support

Thank you to everyone who took part in the government’s second consultation on local government reorganisation, which closed yesterday (15 June 2026).

The government is now reviewing all representations. A decision for our area is expected before the summer parliamentary recess on 16 July 2026. Current timelines remain in place, with elections to the shadow unitary authorities planned for 2027 and the new authorities launching in 2028.

There are no immediate changes to services, all eight West Sussex councils will continue operating as usual until 2028.

We’ll continue to keep you updated as the process progresses.

⚠️ Scams are becoming increasingly believable, so we’re reminding residents to stay vigilant and always check that any correspondence you receive is genuine.

Our parking team regularly checks for potential scams, reporting them to the relevant organisations and helping to raise awareness to protect our community.

If you receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), here are a few things to remember:

🔹 A genuine PCN issued by one of our wardens will always be placed on your vehicle’s windscreen first.

🔹 If the charge remains unpaid, a Notice to Owner will be sent by post to the registered keeper of the vehicle. This will always include our organisation’s name and contact details. Registered keeper information is obtained through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

🔹 Our parking team will never contact you by text message. We’ll only call you if we are returning a voicemail. If you contact us by email or letter to appeal a PCN or ask a question, we will respond using the same method.

🔹 We’ll only request payment of a PCN through our official parking portal, never via a third-party website.

The latest parking scams we’ve seen use councils’ names and include the recipient’s name and vehicle details, but quote an incorrect PCN. It’s therefore important to check the points above carefully before clicking on any links or making a payment.

If you’re unsure whether a PCN is genuine, please contact our parking team at [email protected]. If you believe a message is fraudulent, please report it to Action Fraud.

Please share this post with your family and friends to help protect others from falling victim to these scams.
