Stand Up to Racism Adur & Worthing sends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Hassan El-Khawas, Zeina Alayn and their 14-year-old daughter Sara, who tragically lost their lives in the sea at Shoreham-by-Sea on Tuesday 18 August. We are heartbroken to learn that 6-year-old Saja El-Khawas, who had remained critically ill in hospital, has now also died. Four members of one family have now lost their lives as a result of this terrible tragedy. Our thoughts are with all those who loved them and are grieving this unimaginable loss.

We have been horrified by racist, anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic comments celebrating this tragedy. Whatever someone’s nationality, heritage, skin colour or perceived religion, the loss of a family should be met with compassion; not hatred.

We are also concerned by reporting that foregrounded Hassan’s refugee background without making clear that this was a British-Palestinian family and British citizens. Hassan had roots in Rashidieh Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, but a refugee history should never be used to turn British Palestinians into perpetual outsiders.

There is nothing shameful about being a refugee. But words matter, and years of hostile rhetoric about refugees, Muslims, migrants and racialised communities have helped create a climate in which some feel emboldened to express racism openly.

This was, above all, a devastating human tragedy. Our community must respond with compassion, solidarity and a rejection of racism, Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian hatred.

The 'White Vanguard' mob have now called off their organized rally this Saturday in Brighton.

Our counter rally and celebration of community will still proceed but at the later time of 12 noon.

Once more we can see the impact of organized mobilization against the far right.

We are appalled at what has been taking place in Thetford, Norfolk. Angry mobs of more than 100 people descended on residential areas they believed to include homes of asylum seekers. It has been reported that this violence was sparked by people protesting plans to turn military barracks into housing for asylum seekers.

As reported in The Guardian, the violent protesters harmed police officers and tried to break into a home in the north of the town. They shouted racist abuse and the local MP, Terry Jermy, said: “I’ve had constituents contact me of mixed ethnicity who are terrified that they will be misidentified as asylum seekers and what that might mean for their families.”

Sussex needs to say a loud, clear, NO to racism. We do not want to see this kind of violence perpetrated against anyone and it's up to us to make sure it doesn't happen in our county, our towns or our local neighbourhoods.

Here, on our own doorstep we already see similar, organised racist actions being taken by the far right in the town of Crowborough. We, the majority, must continue to organise in response and to grow in our numbers to show that there is no room for hatred anywhere in the UK.
