Three Families Receive Keys to Rebuilt Homes Under "Build Back Better" Initiative

Hillsborough, Carriacou, May 30, 2026 — The Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government has officially handed over keys to three more families as part of the post-hurricane recovery effort.

The handovers highlight an ongoing partnership between local homeowners and the Government of Grenada under the "Build Back Better Project," designed to restore housing following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl.

New Homes Handed Over

Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Hon. Tevin Andrews, personally presented the keys to the three families:

• Victoria Samuel of Grand Bay
• Richenda & Michael Sylvester of Dover
• Roseann McFarlane of Windward

Funding and Partnership

Minister Andrews emphasized that while taxpayer funds are driving the structural recovery, the contributions of the homeowners themselves remain vital. Under the project framework, homeowners take on the responsibility of completing the final interior elements, including all furnishings.

A Fresh Start After Beryl

For recipient Michael Sylvester and his family, the handover marks the end of a difficult displacement. The Sylvesters lost their entire home during Hurricane Beryl and were forced to live with relatives. Sylvester expressed deep gratitude to Minister Andrews, the "Build Back Better" team, and the contractors for restoring his family's independence.

Carriacou’s Pineapple Revolution: Government Initiative Empowers Farmers, Targets 3,000 Fruits

Hillsborough, Carriacou, May 28th, 2026 - The Government’s drive for agricultural self-sufficiency is yielding sweet results on Carriacou. Over 1,000 pineapple plants, established in October 2025 at the Dumfries Agricultural Station, are showing remarkable progress.

The project is spearheaded by the Division of Agriculture within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government. It aims to eliminate the twin-island dependency on imported pineapples by meeting local consumption demands.

Empowering Local Farmers

District Agriculture Officer Stanford Lawrence revealed that 30 local farmers have already directly benefited since the project's inception. The state-backed initiative serves a dual purpose: securing the local food supply and establishing a reliable, sustainable distribution network of planting materials for farmers to expand their own crops. Project leaders project a bumper maiden harvest of close to 3,000 pineapples for first harvest.

Advanced Technical Training

To guarantee high yields and long-term project success, the Ministry is prioritizing rigorous technical training for the farming community. The latest government-led workshop focused on the critical technique of artificial flower induction, a method used to control and uniform fruiting.

The specialized training session was facilitated by Agronomist and Pineapple Project Coordinator Ronald O'Neale. Highlighting inter-island collaboration, the session received key technical support from Kingsley Thomas, Senior Agriculture Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture in Grenada.

This joint agricultural push underlines the administration's active commitment to modernizing farming techniques, empowering rural entrepreneurs, and fortifying food sovereignty across the nation.
