From one caring Doctor to the next

Dr. Claris Modeste-Curwen → Dr. Myanna Charles

Myanna,

Being a doctor in Grenada means more than treating illness. It means holding the weight of a family’s worry at 2am, celebrating a baby’s first cry, and showing up for a community that calls you by your first name. You already know this — I’ve seen it in how you care for your patients. So I know the care you will have for our people

As I pass the torch to you, I’m not passing it to a stranger. I’m passing it to a colleague who listens first, who sees the person behind the chart, and who believes healthcare and politics is about dignity as much as it is about medicine and care for people.

A few things I’ve learned on this road:

Trust is the best medicine — people forgive a lot if they feel heard.

Rest is not a luxury — you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Lean on St. Mark’s — the farmers, the Fisher folks, the grandmothers who know everyone’s history. They’re your best resource.

Thank you for saying “yes” to this work. Grenada is in good hands with you. If you ever need to talk through a tough case, or just need someone who understands, my door — and my phone — are still open.

With respect and belief in you,
Dr. Claris Modeste-Curwen

Persons were taught the importance of the fish processing, through a workshop in which was held, so they could better learn the valuable skills in fish handling, preservation, and packaging, creating new opportunities for income generation and strengthening the local fishing industry.
It has always been my love to empower our people.

To all our bright young scholars sitting CPEA this week,

As you walk into the exam room, remember this: you are more than a grade. You are the future of St. Mark and of Grenada.

I know you’ve put in late nights, early mornings, and plenty of hard work. Be proud of that. Stay calm, read carefully, and give each question your best shot. Trust what you know.

To the parents, teachers, and guardians who have supported you - thank you. It truly takes a village.

I’m cheering for each and every one of you. Go in confident, do your best, and know that St. Mark believes in you.

All the best. You’ve got this!

Last Sunday I was delighted to participate in a distribution of safety gear and other equipment.
This was coordinated by Windref's Dr Trevor Noel and Mr. Roland Baldeo, working with officers of the fisheries Division.
I was impressed with the number of of young men who received the gifts as well as some older, stalwart fishermen.
This augurs well for the fishing industry and by implication, the economy of Grenada.
I recall another time during COVID when I was invited to perform similar duties.
I am strongly reminded that we need a Jetty more than ever at Waltham.
I call on the Minister of Infrastructure (works) to honour the contract for the Jetty that is lying somewhere in the Ministry and give those fishermen a chance at survival.
Give the young men hope

As member of Parliament for St. Mark’s, I have been actively involved in supporting education and community development in the parish.

Key contributions include:

- *Direct school support*: I have helped facilitate donations of school supplies and resources to local schools, including items like computers, reading books, and PPE for students during the pandemic.

- *Community empowerment programs*: I spearheaded the St. Mark’s Women in Action initiative through the UNDP Women of Worth program, providing entrepreneurial training and seed funding to women in the area. While not directly in classrooms, it’s aimed at strengthening families and the wider community that supports students.

- *Constituency engagement*: As MP, I am known for distributing resources and advocating for education within St. Mark’s, often partnering with local groups and diaspora organizations to benefit schools.

My approach have focused on practical support and building long-term capacity for families in St. Mark’s, which indirectly uplifts the schools and students there.
