Science Beyond Borders for a Healthier Black Sea

Marine Protected Areas play a vital role in conserving biodiversity, restoring ecosystem services, and strengthening climate resilience across the Black Sea Basin.

Within the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin CARE SEA Project, universities, research institutions, protected area managers, local authorities and citizens from Romania, Moldova, Georgia, Türkiye and Greece are working together to advance scientific knowledge and promote evidence-based conservation of transboundary coastal ecosystems.

📢 Call for Papers | International Scientific Conference
project CARE SEA invites researchers, higher education and research institutions, public authorities, environmental practitioners, policy-makers, civil society organisations, students, local communities, and all stakeholders working towards a cleaner Black Sea to submit their contributions to the International Scientific Conference "Transboundary Science for a Cleaner and Sustainable Black Sea."
🌍 Conference themes include:
• Pollution monitoring and integrated environmental assessment
• Environmental modelling, smart observation and data integration
• Transboundary rivers, wetlands and coastal ecosystems
• Climate change, ecosystem health, biodiversity conservation and ecological rehabilitation

🔵 13-16 ივლისს, სალონიკში, CARE SEA-ს პარტნიორებმა მონაწილეობა მიიღეს საერთაშორისო კონფერენციაში ,,CEMEPE“. საერთაშორისო ფორუმზე პარტნიორებმა პროექტის ერთობლივი საქმიანობა და პრეზენტაციები წარადგინეს შემდეგ თემებზე:

🔹 იზოლდა მაჭუტაძე, პროექტის კოორდინატორი (ბსუ) - LP1 BSU - „მოქალაქეთა მეცნიერება, როგორც ეკოსისტემური სერვისების შეფასებისა და აღდგენის დაგეგმვის ინსტრუმენტი CARE SEA პროექტის საკვლევ ტერიტორიაზე - მდინარე ჭოროხში ( საქართველო);

🔹 ქადირ სეიჰანი, პროექტის მენეჯერი, ქარადენიზის ტექნიკური უნივერსიტეტი - PP3 KTU - „თურქეთის აღმოსავლეთ შავიზღვისპირეთის მდინარეების დაბინძურების წყაროები“;

🔹 ანასტასია კასულეა, არისტოტელეს უნივერსიტეტის დოქტორანტი - PP4 AUTH - „მოქალაქეთა ჩართულობა თერმაიკოსის ყურეში მიკროპლასტიკით დაბინძურების მონიტორინგში: მონაწილეობითი მეცნიერების მიდგომა“.

📑 წარმოდგენილი პრეზენტაციები მოქალაქეთა მეცნიერების თემატიკას ეხებოდა. კვლევის შედეგები აისახება საქართველო-თურქეთის ერთობლივ ტრანსსასაზღვრო გარემოსდაცვითი მართვის გეგმაში.

🔵 From 13 to 16 July, CARE SEA project partners participated in the International CEMEPE Conference held in Thessaloniki, Greece. During this International scientific forum, the partners presented the project’s collaborative activities and delivered presentations on the following topics:

🔹 Izolda Matchutadze, Project Coordinator, Batumi S***a Rustaveli State University (LP1 BSU): “Citizen Science as a Tool for Ecosystem Service Assessment and Restoration Planning in the CARE SEA Project Study Area: The Chorokhi River, Georgia”;

🔹 Kadir Seyhan, Project Manager, Karadeniz Technical University (PP3 KTU): “Pollution Sources in the Rivers of Türkiye’s Eastern Black Sea Region”;

🔹 Anastasia Kasoulea, PhD Candidate, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (PP4 AUTH): “Engaging Citizens in Monitoring Microplastic Pollution in the Thermaikos Gulf: A Participatory Science Approach.”

📑 The presentations highlighted the important role of citizen science in environmental monitoring, ecosystem assessment, and restoration planning. The research findings will be incorporated into the Joint Georgia–Türkiye Transboundary Environmental Management plan.

🔹Organised within the framework of the CARE SEA Project - “Cooperation and Awareness for a Pollution-Free and Environmentally Sustainable Black Sea” - implemented under the Interreg VI-B NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme and co-funded by the European Union.

🔹 The CARE SEA International Scientific Conference, “Transboundary Science and Integrated Solutions for a Cleaner and More Resilient Black Sea Basin”, is the final international scientific and public event of the CARE SEA Project (BSB00559). It is designed as a high-level interdisciplinary forum for the presentation, critical discussion, and wider dissemination of the Project’s scientific findings, methodological advances, policy-relevant recommendations, and practical environmental-management outputs.

🔹 The Conference brings together researchers, higher-education and research institutions, public authorities, environmental practitioners, policy-makers, civil society organisations, students, local communities, and other stakeholders engaged in pollution prevention, biodiversity conservation, ecological rehabilitation, citizen science, and sustainable environmental governance across the Black Sea Basin.

🔵 Izolda Machutadze, coordinator of the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme project BSB00559 CARE SEA - ,,Cooperation and Awareness Raising for a Pollution-Free and Environmentally Clean Black Sea” - scientist at Batumi S***a Rustaveli State University and Head of the Department of Kolkheti mires and water ecosystems conservation at the Institute of Phytopathology and Biodiversity, was awarded the honorary title of ,,Honorary Citizen of Kobuleti" in recognition of her many years of fruitful scientific and public service, as well as her outstanding contribution to the development of Kolkheti lowland.

🔹The award was presented to Ms. Matchutadze by Zurab Pataradze, Chairman of the Government of Ajara, and Tsotne Ananidze, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ajara.

🌍 Today is International Plastic Free Day 🌊

Single-use plastics may only last for minutes in our hands, but they can remain in the environment for hundreds of years.

From rivers and coastlines to the open sea, plastic pollution threatens marine ecosystems, wildlife, and ultimately human health. Reducing our dependence on disposable plastics is a small change that can create a big collective impact.

At CARE SEA, we believe that awareness, science, and citizen participation are key to protecting our seas and coastal environments. Every reusable bottle, bag, or cup matters. Every action counts.

🌏🌳🌿 დედამიწის დღეს, სლოგანით - „ჩვენი ძალა, ჩვენი პლანეტა“, ბათუმის შოთა რუსთაველის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტმა, Interreg NEXT შავი ზღვის აუზის პროექტის (BSB00559 CARE SEA) ფარგლებში და პარტნიორი ორგანიზაციების მხარდაჭერით, მდინარე ჭოროხის დელტაზე მასშტაბური დასუფთავების აქცია გამართა.

🔹 დასუფთავების აქცია მიზნად ისახავდა მდინარე ჭოროხის დელტის გაწმენდას პლასტიკისა და სხვა ტიპის ნარჩენებისგან. ადგილზე განხორციელდა ნარჩენების სეპარაცია, პლასტიკის ფრაქცია გამოიყო ცალკე და გადაეცა გადამამუშავებელ საწარმოს რეციკლირებისთვის, ხოლო დანარჩენი ნარჩენი ბათუმის დასუფთავების სამსახურმა შესაბამის ნაგავსაყრელზე გადაიტანა.

🔹 დასუფთავების აქციაში ბათუმის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის რექტორი, სტუდენტები და პერსონალი, კომპანია „კოკა-კოლა ბოთლერს ჯორჯიას“ თანამშრომელები, ბათუმის მეთხუთმეტე საჯარო სკოლის მოსწავლეები და მასწავლებლები, ასევე ბათუმის მერიისა და დასუფთავების სამსახურის თანამშრომლები მონაწილეობდნენ.

🔹 ღონისძიება ბათუმის შოთა რუსთაველის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის, Interreg NEXT შავი ზღვის აუზის პროექტის (BSB00559 CARE SEA), კომპანია ,,კოკა-კოლა ბოთლერს ჯორჯიას” და ,,საქართველოს მწვანეთა მოძრაობა/დედამიწის მეგობრები“ ორგანიზებით გაიმართა.

🌏🌳🌿 On the occasion of Earth Day, under the slogan “Our Power, Our Planet,” Batumi S***a Rustaveli State University, within the framework of the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme project (BSB00559 CARE SEA), and with the support of partner organizations, conducted a large-scale clean-up campaign at the Chorokhi River Delta.

🔹 The primary objective of the campaign was to remove plastic and other types of waste from the Chorokhi River Delta. Collected waste was sorted on-site: the plastic fraction was separated and delivered to a recycling facility, while the remaining waste was transported by the Batumi Cleaning Service to a designated landfill.

🔹 The clean-up campaign brought together the Rector, students, and administrative staff of Batumi S***a Rustaveli State University, employees of Coca-Cola Bottlers Georgia, students and teachers of Batumi Public School No. 15, as well as representatives of Batumi City Hall and the municipal cleaning service.

🔹 The event was organized by Batumi S***a Rustaveli State University, the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme project (BSB00559 CARE SEA), Coca-Cola Bottlers Georgia, and the Greens Movement of Georgia / Friends of the Earth.
