Friends of Refugees

Friends of Refugees Refugees Experiencing Abundant Life in Flourishing Communities Every year, thousands of refugees come to the United States seeking a better life.

After being forced to leave their homes and communities, many refugees arrive in the States with very little. Without money and resources, refugees must rely on human service organizations like Friends of Refugees. We provide ESL/Family literacy education, after-school tutoring, internet cafe, job skills training, youth summer camp, pre-natal education, community gardening, clothing/food distribution, and MORE!

A few weeks ago, hosted their annual photo exhibit! This year, the show featured the art of four incredible Embrace participants who generously shared their journeys to motherhood through photography and narrative storytelling. Over 40 friends attended to honor these artists. It was a wonderful celebration of the artists and the strength found in this community!

Did you know your donation may be eligible for a company match that can double or even triple its impact?

One of our recent donors, Andrew Song, shared why he partners with Friends. Through his company foundation, his gift was matched dollar for dollar, instantly tripling his support for Friends of Refugees.

We encourage you to check with your employer to see if they offer a matching gift program. It is a simple way to make an even greater impact for the New Americans we serve.

Thank you, Andrew, and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation for your generous partnership!

Meet one of our newest board members: Teri Bouchard! Teri comes to us with 14 years of experience as an employment attorney.

“I'd like to contribute more to protecting our neighbors - especially our communities that are most vulnerable in this current administration. I've been hoping to get plugged into a board in general because I need to be more of service, but I have waited for an opportunity to present itself… My father-in-law serves on the Friends of Refugees Board and has, for some time, told me I should consider it. This year, it felt like it was the right time.”

Please join us in welcoming Teri to the board!

We had the opportunity to participate in this year’s Night of Ideas, organized by Villa Albertine in partnership with the Carter Center. This event allows participants to dive into civic engagement in Atlanta and find new ways to be involved. The Night of Ideas aims to foster dialogue across disciplines, connect ideas with the arts, and open space for new voices.

Thank you, @.albertine and , for inviting Friends of Refugees to be a part of this incredible event!

Yesterday was an unforgettable day of celebration and transition at Friends. We gathered with grateful hearts to welcome our new board members, honor those who have faithfully served and are now rolling off, and mark an exciting new chapter with the arrival of our new Executive Director, Kevin Kipfer. At the same time, we shared a heartfelt farewell to our outgoing Executive Director Kendra Jeffreys, whose leadership has truly left a lasting impact. It was a day full of reflection, appreciation, and hope for what’s ahead.

We welcome our new board members, Teri Bouchard and John Pitt! And a huge thanks to our board members, Helen Ayoub Shuford, Alison LaForge and April Shaffer for faithfully serving our New American community. Board meetings aren’t typically known for being fun or inspiring—but at Friends, they are truly a meaningful time filled with laughter, gratitude, and joy. This important work could not be done without the support and commitment from our board members!!

graduation is always a joyful time!

There were 18 entrepreneurs in our Clarkston cohort this year, with 69 total graduating ventures from the Start:ME program.

For Friends of Refugees, partnering with Start:ME over the last 14 years has been an incredible benefit for the community. Not only have we seen a high number of New American entrepreneurs go through the program, but the small businesses that have been launched in the Clarkston area provide opportunity and economic mobility for the community as a whole.

If you want to support any of these new small businesses or other entrepreneurs that have come through this incredible program, check out the link below!
