South Korea presents its 2027 budget with a historic turning point, and that is because for the first time Seoul allocates a budget line item to initiate the R&D program for the nuclear-powered submarine KSS-N.

We are looking at an 8,000-ton design powered by an SMR reactor fueled by low-enriched uranium and equipped with VLS silos for Hyunmoo series ballistic missiles.

With the KSS-N, Seoul seeks the capability to maintain a submarine in prolonged submersion at high speed to ensure continuous tracking of regional SSBNs, secure its maritime communication lines in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, and provide the ROK Navy with the necessary muscle ahead of the future transfer of OPCON by the United States.

Polish company Under Ant has demonstrated the Avabox launch platform for its Avalon UAV.

The Avabox is designed to be mounted on a pickup truck and can sequentially launch up to 12 Avalon drones, potentially reducing deployment time and allowing multiple UAVs to be rapidly deployed from a single vehicle.

The Avalon has a stated range of up to 30 km, a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a payload capacity of up to 3.5 kg. The flight time is stated as up to 40 minutes.

According to Under Ant, the UAV can be configured for various missions, including reconnaissance, cargo delivery and interception of other drones.

U.S. company Voltaic Marine has demonstrated an air-defense configuration of its AEU39 unmanned surface vessel (USV).

The AEU39 measures approximately 11.9 metres (39 feet) in length, reaches speeds of up to 41 km/h (25.5 mph), and reportedly has a range of around 9,300 km (5,778 miles). The vessel can carry up to 1.8 tonnes (4,000 lbs) of payload.

The AEU39 is equipped with solar panels and a 300 kWh battery, allowing it to reportedly remain on station in standby mode for weeks. A diesel engine can also be installed as a generator.

Through a collaboration with Moog Space and Defense, the USV has been fitted with a RIwP turret. The remotely operated weapon station can be configured with a 30 mm cannon and surface-to-air missiles such as the FIM-92 Stinger and APKWS II, among other effectors.

The concept is intended to provide an autonomous maritime platform with persistent air-defense capabilities.
