Minerals Commission Honours Osagyefo’s Legacy at NkrumahFest 2026

At Nkroful, the birthplace of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Minerals Commission proudly joined the nation in celebrating NkrumahFest 2026. The festival marked Nkrumah at 117 and carried the message that the legacy continues. The Board and Management were fully represented, underscoring the Commission's commitment to honouring Ghana's rich history and the enduring legacy of Dr. Nkrumah. Their participation highlighted the institution's recognition of the pivotal role Nkrumah played in shaping Ghana's independence and laying the foundation for the country's mineral resource governance.

The Commission's presence at the festival was not only ceremonial but also symbolic. By standing alongside traditional leaders, government officials and community members, the Commission reaffirmed its dedication to national unity and cultural heritage. The event offered the Commission an opportunity to showcase its alignment with Nkrumah's vision of industrialisation and resource-driven development, while strengthening ties with stakeholders in Nkroful and beyond.

As speeches, cultural displays and tributes unfolded on stage, the Commission's delegation joined the celebration with pride and reverence. North East Traditional Leaders Petition Lands Minister to Formalise Mining Activities for Regional Development

Today, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources received a formal petition from the traditional leadership of the North East Region, calling on government to reform mining operations through strategic partnerships.

Submitted by the Overlord and elders of the area, the petition advocates for collaboration between the Traditional Council, the State, and potential investors to drive responsible and sustainable mineral extraction for the benefit of local communities.

The delegation highlighted economic losses caused by entities holding prospecting licences for over 16 years without commencing mining operations. According to the traditional leaders, formalising the Region's gold mining sector would curb illegal operations, reduce environmental damage, stem youth migration through local job creation, and generate essential tax and royalty revenues for the State.

In response, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), said the petition aligns with ongoing legislative reforms aimed at eliminating speculative licensing. The Minister disclosed that a new mining bill currently before Cabinet will introduce strict performance evaluations, mandating the revocation of prospecting licences after non-performance reviews, to allow active investors access to the concessions.

The Minerals Commission has committed to immediate action on the petition. Mr. Isaac Tandoh, Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, confirmed that a technical team will conduct field assessments in the area to evaluate the legal status of existing titles, inspect the concessions, and draft a structured operational framework to advance the proposed partnership.

To ensure swift ex*****on, the Ministry and the Minerals Commission have nominated representatives to lead coordination for the successful implementation of the project. Both government officials and traditional leaders expressed confidence that replacing illegal mining with a structured, large-scale enterprise will safeguard the local environment while delivering transformative economic opportunities to the people of the North East Region.

Minerals Commission Moves to Tackle Poor Wages in Contract Mining Operations

September 8, 2026 - The Minerals Commission has intensified oversight of pay and working conditions in Ghana’s contract mining industry, cautioning that the country’s local content agenda must not undermine the welfare of Ghanaian workers.

At a meeting with major contract mining companies and stakeholders, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Isaac Andrews Tandoh stressed that increased Ghanaian ownership of mining operations must deliver tangible benefits for employees. He also highlighted that local participation must not become merely a change in ownership; it must translate into better opportunities, fair remuneration, and improved working conditions for Ghanaian workers.

The Commission’s intervention follows rising concern that fierce competition for mining contracts is driving some operators to submit unsustainably low bids, with labour costs among the most vulnerable areas. The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union has separately highlighted disparities between wages and conditions offered by certain indigenous contractors compared to foreign-owned firms, intensifying calls for regulatory action.

In response, the Commission has directed contract mining companies to develop an industry-wide framework setting benchmarks for wages and conditions of service. Stakeholders will review the draft before submission to the Commission for approval. If adopted, the framework would establish consistent standards across the sector, preventing firms from competing by suppressing labour costs. Future contract awards could also hinge on bidders’ ability to demonstrate fair wage provisions alongside technical and financial capacity.

The move reflects a broader shift in how the Commission evaluates Ghana’s local content policy, extending beyond the transfer of contracts to Ghanaian firms to whether ownership generates sustainable businesses and decent jobs. Mr. Tandoh noted that local ownership must deliver local value, and local value must include decent jobs and fair wages. He urged Ghanaian contractors to compete on technical expertise, productivity, and service quality rather than on the lowest price.

Minerals Commission Deepens Engagement with British High Commission

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Andrews Tandoh, led a delegation from the Commission on a courtesy call to the British High Commission in Accra. The engagement focused on strengthening Ghana–UK cooperation and advancing responsible, sustainable and mutually beneficial investment in Ghana’s mining sector.

Mr. Tandoh highlighted recent regulatory developments, including the proposed reduction of mining lease tenure from 30 to 20 years. He explained that the reform is intended to establish a fit-for-purpose legal framework that safeguards Ghana’s national interests while providing adequate protection and certainty for investors.

Discussions also centred on enhancing local content and increasing Ghanaian participation across the mining value chain. The CEO reiterated the Government’s commitment to creating more opportunities for Ghanaian businesses, professionals and communities to benefit meaningfully from the country’s mineral resources.

He further reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening trade relations with the United Kingdom and highlighted the Government’s ambition to ensure that, from 2030, only refined gold is exported as part of the country’s broader value-addition and industrialisation agenda.

The British High Commission welcomed the regulatory updates and expressed its continued support for responsible and sustainable investment in Ghana’s minerals sector.

August 26, 2026 - The Minerals Commission received a high-level delegation from the Republic of Guinea’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, as part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation in the extractive sector and environmental governance.

The meeting, held at the Commission’s headquarters in Accra, brought together senior Guinean officials with the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Isaac Tandoh, and members of the management team. Discussions centered on Ghana’s regulatory framework for artisanal and small-scale mining, with particular attention to ongoing reforms designed to formalize the sector, strengthen compliance, and promote responsible mining practices that protect both communities and the environment.

The dialogue also highlighted Ghana’s government-led land reclamation initiatives, which are transforming degraded mining sites into productive landscapes. The Commission outlined its integrated approach to reclamation, combining environmental restoration with alternative livelihood programmes in agriculture, vocational training, and sustainable enterprise development for affected communities.

Minerals Commission Inaugurates Kenyasi Multi-Purpose Astroturf Complex to Boost Sports and Community Life.

In a significant contribution to community development in the Ahafo Region, the Minerals Commission has officially commissioned the Kenyasi Multipurpose Astroturf Sports Complex. The newly built facility, strategically situated in the heart of the mining hub, promises to transform recreational and social life for the residents of Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotoroso, and neighbouring communities.

Designed to meet international standards, the complex boasts an Olympic-size synthetic football pitch, regulation athletics tracks, and a spectator stand with a capacity to seat over 500 people. Additional amenities include changing rooms, an infirmary, and other essential support facilities. Beyond fostering sports development and nurturing young talent, the centre is expected to serve as a vibrant hub for community gatherings and stimulate local economic activity.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Dr. Yusif Suleman, extended appreciation to the three Paramouncies of Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2 and Ntotoroso, the Asutifi North District Assembly, and Newmont Ghana for their invaluable contributions to the project's success.

Hon. Suleman also underscored this project as another tangible manifestation of Government's commitment to ensure mining communities actually share in the gains from the mineral wealth extracted in their localities. He affirmed that communities hosting mining operations must be viewed as active partners rather than mere spectators in the development process. "Investments in social infrastructure are not optional, they are essential to translating mineral wealth into improved livelihoods and sustainable growth," he noted.

Echoing these sentiments, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Tandoh, emphasised that the Commission’s mandate extends well beyond regulatory oversight. "We believe that as mineral resources are extracted from the earth, the communities that host these operations must see and feel the benefits. The Minerals Commission is committed to ensuring that mining activities deliver meaningful benefits to the country without putting people and the environment at risk. This is the philosophy that underpins everything we do," he stated. He described the new sports complex as a vital bridge connecting the riches beneath the earth to the wellbeing of the people, and commended the collaboration between government, the traditional authorities, Newmont Ghana, and the host communities that brought this project to fruition.

The ceremony drew an assembly of dignitaries, including the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Charity Gardiner, representatives of the traditional councils of Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, and Ntotoroso, the Board Chairman and members of the Minerals Commission, and the Managing Director of Newmont Ahafo Mine, Mr. Danquah Addo-Yobo. Also present were officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, management and staff of the Minerals Commission, and other key players in the mining industry.

Minerals Commission Commissions New Kumasi Regional Office

The Minerals Commission has commissioned its new Kumasi Regional Office in the Ashanti Region, marking a significant milestone in its drive to decentralise regulatory services and strengthen minerals governance across Ghana.

The modern complex comprises a seven-storey office block, a two-storey specialised laboratory, and a museum and public education facility. Designed as a one-stop centre for minerals administration, the facility will improve access to regulatory services, mineral testing, technical guidance, stakeholder engagement and public education, while also serving as a designated centre for the Inspectorate Division’s licensure examinations.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Dr. Yusif Sulemana, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening and decentralising Ghana’s mineral administration to ensure effective regulation, improved service delivery and responsible management of the country’s mineral resources. He emphasised the importance of bringing regulatory institutions closer to mining communities and industry stakeholders as part of Government’s broader agenda for sustainable development of the sector.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Andrews Tandoh, stated that the new facility represents a tangible manifestation of a new era in minerals governance,one defined by accessibility, efficiency, transparency and sustainable development. He noted that the office will reduce travel time and associated costs for stakeholders, facilitate faster processing of applications and strengthen regulatory oversight across the Ashanti Region and beyond.

The ceremony was graced by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, representatives of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II members of the Minerals Commission Board government officials, traditional leaders, mining industry representatives and other distinguished stakeholders.
The new regional office reinforces the Commission’s commitment to bringing its services closer to mining companies, small-scale miners, host communities and the general public, while promoting responsible and sustainable mining for national development.
