FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ZoDF, DIRECT AID SUPPORT 450 FLOOD-AFFECTEDHOUSEHOLDS AT KASOA FREE TOWN
Kasoa -The Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF), in partnership with humanitarian organisation Direct Aid, has distributed 450 food packages to 450 households at Kasoa Free Town affected by the devastating floods of June 29.
The intervention followed an appeal by the Chief Executive Officer of ZoDF, Alhaji Halidu Haruna, after the heavy rains and subsequent flooding caused loss of lives and extensive damage to homes, properties and livelihoods in Kasoa and other affected communities.
Addressing beneficiaries at the distribution centre, Alhaji Haruna said Direct Aid responded promptly to ZoDF’s request for humanitarian assistance and had earlier extended relief support to flood-affected communities, including Alajo, Abelemkpe, Avenor and surrounding areas, before the latest exercise at Kasoa Free Town.
Direct Aid officials and field workers were supported during the exercise by a community task force comprising traditional leaders and other community representatives.
Speaking on behalf of Direct Aid, Sheikh Anas Yakub, who is in charge of the orphanage at Mercy Social Center a subsidiary as of Direct Aid, expressed appreciation to the organisation’s donors in Kuwait for making the intervention possible.
The turnout exceeded the 450 packages available, leaving some affected residents unable to benefit immediately. Mr. Yakub said those persons had been registered and assured them that efforts would be made to provide another package of assistance soon.
The Assembly Member for Kasoa Free Town, Hon. Mohammed Ali, commended ZoDF and Direct Aid for the scale of the intervention, describing it as one of the most significant relief exercises he had witnessed in the area since the floods. He noted that residents were still awaiting some of the assistance promised from other quarters.
Alhaji Haruna encouraged beneficiaries to remember the donors in their prayers and expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for creating what he described as an enabling environment for collaboration between state institutions and humanitarian organisations.
He stressed that effective disaster response requires cooperation among government institutions, development partners, humanitarian organisations, traditional authorities and local communities.
The Kasoa Free Town exercise forms part of the continuing ZoDF–Direct Aid humanitarian intervention aimed at providing immediate relief and restoring hope to households affected by the recent floods.
