The Registrar for the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA), Francis Ennin, and his team have taken decisive action to protect public health by closing down four government and private mortuaries in the Eastern Region.
The affected facilities include the Suhum Government Hospital Mortuary, Asamankese Government Hospital Mortuary, Great Consolidated Diamond Hospital Mortuary, and Adom Funeral Home.
According to MoFFA, these facilities fell short of the association’s operational standards and regulatory requirements.
In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Ennin explained that the closure is part of broader efforts to ensure that mortuaries and funeral homes operate in safe and hygienic conditions. He stressed that the move is not intended to collapse businesses but to safeguard public health.
Key issues identified during the inspections included bodies being stored on the floor, poor sanitary conditions, lack of personal protective equipment (PPEs), absence of standby generators, and the failure of some facilities to register with MoFFA.
The affected facilities have been given a two-week ultimatum to discharge all bodies and take corrective measures to address the deficiencies noted.

Mr. Ennin warned that facilities that fail to comply will face legal action and risk a total shutdown.

MORTUARIES SHUT DOWN IN EASTERN REGION OVER SAFETY VIOLATIONS

The Registrar for the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA), Francis Ennin, and his team have taken decisive action to protect public health by closing down four government and private mortuaries in the Eastern Region.

The Mortuary and Funeral Facilities Agency has shut down three facilities in Greater Accra for operating without licenses and failing to meet environmental standards.

Officials have warned that operators must adhere to regulations in order to prevent shutdowns, and this action
targets private and public facilities that do not comply.

The following facilities are facing closures: Children’s Hospital Mortuary, Ebenezer Funeral Parlour and the University of Ghana Hospital Mortuary due to noncompliance and meeting of required standards for operating

Mr.Francis Ennin, the Registrar of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, mentioned that they have sent several letters to the managers of these facilities. They also made media announcements to warn them, but the managers have not followed the rules.

The Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital mortuary was closed due to not following regulations.

Notably, among the public health risk identified by the inspectors include, lack of personal protective equipment, the use of air conditioners instead of compressors for the storage of bodies which tend to create health hazards for nearby communities.

Ebenezer Funeral Parlour in Kasoa was found to be operating without proper registration from the regulator.

The Agency had previously visited the facility at Kasoa and advised management to adhere to public health and safety guidelines, however, this advise was not heeded to.

The University of Ghana Hospital mortuary was inspected and found to be below standards, with multiple complaints noted.

Mr. Francis Ennin said they will keep up these inspections until the operators comply with the rules.

He emphasized that they cannot negotiate with owners who wish to run their facilities without proper regulation.
