LaDMA SUCCESSFULLY UNDERTAKES TWO-DAY NATIONAL CLEAN-UP EXERCISE TO ENHANCE ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION
The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), under the leadership of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei, successfully participated in the nationwide two-day National Clean-Up Exercise held on Friday, 10th July and Saturday, 11th July 2026, in line with the Presidential directive aimed at improving environmental sanitation, mitigating flooding, and reducing the risk of disease outbreaks following the recent heavy rains.
The two-day exercise brought together government officials, Assembly staff, security agencies, waste management companies, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, community leaders, youth groups, and residents in a coordinated effort to restore cleanliness across the municipality. Throughout the exercise, Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei supervised operations at various locations, interacting with residents and stakeholders while encouraging everyone to take collective responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
The first day of the exercise was highlighted by the participation of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, who joined residents at Tse Addo to undertake the clean-up exercise. The President was accompanied by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, and other government officials. The MCE, Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei, together with Assembly officials, welcomed the delegation and coordinated activities within the municipality to ensure a successful exercise.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana National Ambulance Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Immigration Service, the Bureau of National Investigations, and other national security institutions actively participated by supporting the clean-up activities, maintaining security, and ensuring the smooth coordination of the exercise alongside the Municipal Assembly.
Activities on the first day focused on strategic locations including Tse Addo (Old Police Station Area), Tse Addo Roundabout, Aviation/Airport Area, Giffard Road, the 37 Military Hospital–Shangri-La Stretch, and the Accra Mall Enclave. Participants desilted choked drains, cleaned gutters, swept streets, removed weeds and debris, collected refuse, and cleared flood-prone areas. Heavy equipment, including excavators and tipper trucks, was deployed to support the desilting of major drains and the evacuation of waste to approved disposal sites. Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei inspected several operational sites and commended the commitment shown by residents and partner institutions.
The second day witnessed massive participation from residents across all ten electoral areas of the municipality. Communities including Borla Junction Stretch, Agyeman Drain Stretch, Adobetor (Kojo Sardine Area) Storm Drain, Koliko Drain Stretch, Tse Addo Old Police Station Area, and the La Traditional Council Beach Road Stretch came alive as residents joined Assembly staff, Environmental Health Officers, Assembly Members, traditional authorities, youth groups, and security personnel to clean drains, remove refuse, and improve environmental sanitation. Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei encouraged residents to sustain the momentum by making sanitation a daily responsibility rather than an occasional exercise.
The Environmental Health Department, working closely with waste management companies under the supervision of the MCE, ensured the prompt evacuation of refuse generated during the exercise while also educating residents on proper waste disposal practices and flood prevention measures. These efforts prevented secondary pollution and reinforced the Assembly's commitment to protecting public health.
The two-day exercise resulted in significant improvements in environmental sanitation, including the desilting of major drains to improve stormwater flow, the removal of large quantities of refuse and silt, cleaner streets and public spaces, increased public awareness on sanitation and flood prevention, and strengthened collaboration between the Assembly and communities.
Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei expressed appreciation to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, the Government of Ghana, the security agencies, waste management companies, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, community leaders, volunteers, and residents for their dedication and active participation. He emphasized that maintaining a clean municipality requires continuous collaboration and urged residents to uphold good sanitation practices beyond the national exercise.
