LaDMA MARKS GHANA’S 69TH INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH CALL FOR UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT
The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly joined the rest of Ghana to celebrate the country’s 69th Independence Day with a colourful ceremony held at the forecourt of the La Traditional Council (La Royal Palace).
The event brought together school children, security services, Assembly Members, traditional authorities, and members of the general public. It was held under the national theme, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” which highlights the importance of national unity, economic growth, and a renewed commitment to improving the living conditions of citizens.
The celebration began with the arrival of dignitaries, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei, the Member of Parliament for the La Dade-Kotopon Constituency and Deputy Minister for Local Government Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, The Municipal Education Director, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, and other invited guests. The ceremony officially commenced with the singing of the National Anthem and an opening prayer, followed by a march-past by participating groups.
Students from various Basic and Senior High School cadet represented as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Arm force and Ghana Navy service displayed impressive discipline, coordination, and patriotism during the parade, earning admiration from dignitaries and spectators.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei emphasized the significance of the national theme, calling on citizens to work collectively to strengthen the economy, promote accountability, and create opportunities that improve livelihoods. He stressed the need for integrity, hard work, respect for public property, support for local businesses, and the rejection of corruption.
The MCE reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to infrastructure development, sanitation improvement, youth empowerment, and local economic growth. He also highlighted the municipality’s educational achievements, particularly students who received Presidential BECE Awards in 2024 and 2025, including those from Garrison Junior High School and Christ the King School.
He further advised the youth to avoid cybercrime, substance abuse, and shortcuts to success, urging them instead to focus on education, discipline, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Residents were also encouraged to fulfill their civic responsibilities by paying taxes, maintaining sanitation, supporting local businesses, and protecting public infrastructure.
Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for the constituency and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, also addressed the gathering. She noted that independence goes beyond freedom and requires a shared responsibility to build and shape the nation’s future. She emphasized that true independence is reflected in strong institutions, community development, and opportunities for the younger generation.
She commended the hardworking people of La Dade-Kotopon—including fisherfolk, traders, teachers, and parents—for their role in community development. She also highlighted the importance of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the La community while striving for progress.
Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah further stressed that education remains a key pillar for national development, praising outstanding students who excelled in the 2025 BECE, as well as teachers and parents for their dedication.
Awards were presented to schools and marching contingents that demonstrated outstanding performance during the parade. The selection was based on turnout, marching skills, discipline, and overall display. In the Senior High School category, St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School cadet emerged as the winner after an impressive representation of the Ghana Police Service during the march-past. In the Basic School category, St. Maurice Roman Catholic A & B Junior High School secured first place for their exceptional performance.
In his closing remarks, the MCE, Hon Alfredos Nii Anyetei expressed appreciation to the organizing committee, security agencies, schools, and all participants for contributing to the success of the celebration. He urged residents to continue to promote peace, unity, and active participation in the development of the municipality.
The event was widely regarded as successful, promoting patriotism, unity, discipline, and community participation, particularly among the youth.
