“Issues of HIV/AIDS constitute a serious matter to the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly and I am happy that people have voluntarily come forward to have their HIV status tested. Those who will know their status will also know the direction to go. If you tested positive, that is not the end of life, there are drugs you will take to sustain your life” — Hon. Roland Ayo Atanga.

He was addressing members of the public this Thursday (August 20, 2026) at the Bolgatanga main lorry station, where he launched some carefully-produced HIV/AIDS public awareness radio jingles as part of strategies adopted by the Assembly and the Municipal Health Directorate, geared at drastically cutting down the rising numbers of HIV infections in the Municipality.

Hon. Ayoo entreated the youth of the Municipality to drop the attitude of chasing extravagant lifestyles as a result of peer pressure which at the end, endangers their lives as some often indulge in trading s*x with multiple people for gain.

In his remarks, Bolgatanga Municipal Health Director, Alhaji Alhassan Lawal revealed that, available records show a rising trend in HIV infections in the area as the first half of 2026 has already registered some 157 new infections as against 155 for same period in 2025. He observed that the Bolgatanga Municipal area continues to be among hotspots for HIV infections because of its metropolitan nature and the fact that, it is the centre of the Upper East Region.

Alhaji Lawal further observed that, for a while now, sensitization on HIV/AIDS has been on the low leading to the alarming increasing infections and thus, called on all stakeholders including the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, the media and health sector NGOs to double their efforts and intensify public awareness creation and other related HIV/AIDS activities to constantly remind the public of prevention methods and how to seek care-management, should one contract the virus.

The Health Director noted that, since infected people do not immediately present signs and symptoms of HIV/AIDS, the public should cultivate the habit of periodic voluntary mass testing for it is only when knows their status that one can exercise caution and as well, go for early treatment and management of the disease in order to reduce the risk of the HIV virus multiplying in their system to cause AIDS.

He commended the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive and Management of the Assembly for readily assisting the health directorate to produce and launch the campaign jingles and hoped such collaboration and partnership continue in the fight against the disease. He also advised the youth against rampant use of emergency contraceptives which only prevent pregnancies but not HIV/AIDS and other s*xually transmitted diseases. He rather preached condom use which plays the dual role of stopping unwanted pregnancies and the contraction of diseases during s*x.

EMPOWERING RURAL FARMERS TO UNDERTAKE DRY-SEASON FARMING

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Roland Ayo Atanga, last Saturday, 15th August, 2026, engaged and educated dry-season farmers within the Yikene Zone of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly on a new farmer-focused by the Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Hon. Isaac Adongo, which is primarily aimed at supporting and promoting dry-season farming.

The initiative presents a timely move towards improving food production and food security while creating sustainable livelihoods, and empowering the Municipality’s hardworking farmers to maximize the potential of dry-season agriculture. The Municipality, just like many other districts in the North of Ghana, experiences one rainy season annually, which often comes with erratic rainfall patterns.

The farmers were therefore full of praises for the MCE, Hon. Ayoo and the MP, Hon. Adongo, for the intervention which indicates their commitment to the development of agriculture and the economic well-being of the rural people, especially, farmers.

Hon. Ayoo explained that, the initiative by the MP resulted from discussions and collaborations involving Hon. Isaac Adongo, the MCE and the authorities of the Irrigation Company of Upper Regions, (ICOUR). He disclosed that to the delighted farmers that, over 2000 bags of assorted fertilizers have already been secured, with five (5) tractors and seedlings for use by the farmers.

Hon. Ayoo emphasized that, “Together, we can transform dry-season farming into a stronger pillar of food security and economic empowerment in the Upper East Region”.
