Annual Performance Review - 2025
The Wa East District organized its 2025 Annual Performance Review on 25th February 2025. The program was graced by many partners in the healthcare sector, including the Hon. DCE, Hon. Shaibu Adam, and the District Coordinating Director of Wa East. Also in attendance were the District Director of Education, the District Director of Agriculture, the District Commander of the Ghana Police Service, the District Commander of the Ghana Fire Service, the District Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Chief Pharmacist of the Regional Health Administration who represented the Regional Director of Health Services. Mr. Christiantus Dary, Deputy Chief Nutrition Officer at the Regional Nutrition Unit, and the World Vision representative for the Upper West Region were also present.
Welcome Address by the Ag. District Director
During the Ag. District Director’s (Mr. Sunkari Stephen) welcome address, he acknowledged the presence of all stakeholders and partners who made time to attend the program. He stated that there is a new wave of energy in the district due to the commitment of the Hon. DCE and the Hon. Member of Parliament, who have allocated significant resources to the health sector this year. He said that during the year under review, the Hon. MP procured essential equipment for health facilities and built a modern Health Centre at Tuosa with support from Qatar Charity. The Hon. MP also renovated some CHPS compounds and provided assorted equipment to Chagguapaani, Gudaayiri, and Kpaglahi CHPS compounds. He noted that the Hon. MP also supported the District Health Administration in procuring tyres for its only vehicle. The District Assembly has also built and handed over the Yaro CHPS compound to the district.
For the 2026 year, the District Assembly has planned to construct a number of CHPS compounds in 2026, including upgrading the Bulenga Health Centre to a polyclinic facility. They have also committed to providing laboratory facilities at Funsi Health Centre and Bulenga Health Centre. He stated that these developments in the health sector reinforce the theme for the review: “Repositioning Clinical Healthcare Service in the Wa East District for Better Health Outcomes: The Role of Stakeholders.”
Performance Highlights
He also noted that OPD attendance during the year under review declined compared to 2024. The total OPD attendance for 2025 was 42,819, compared to 45,617 in 2024. Among the 42,819 OPD attendances, 18,565 were males and 24,254 were females. The district also achieved key successes in some areas. For skilled delivery, the district recorded 55.1% in 2024 compared to 59.8% in 2025. For family planning acceptor rate, the district recorded 39.2% in 2024 compared to 38.1% in 2025. For immunization services, the district recorded 80.3% for BCG in 2024 and 98.7% in 2025. For Penta 3, the district recorded 97.6% in 2024 and 107.1% in 2025.
Address by the Hon. DCE
The Hon. DCE acknowledged Dr. Alex Bapula, the Ag. DDHS, before Dr. Benjamin Aminyuure for his leadership and guidance. He said Dr. Alex was one of the people who guided him when he took over as District Chief Executive. He also thanked Dr. Benjamin for the interest and enthusiasm he has brought to the district. He noted that the vehicle for the Health Administration is weak and called on other stakeholders to support the district with a new vehicle. He emphasized that given the vast nature of the district, the Health Administration requires a strong vehicle to effectively supervise health services. The Hon. DCE stated that although there is an Agenda 111 hospital project in the district, it is regarded as a legacy project; therefore, the Assembly is not placing its hopes solely on that project. He pledged that by the end of the year 2026, the district will have either a polyclinic or a hospital facility.
